webfact Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Pro tip: Expert advice on how to use escalatorsBy Coconuts BangkokBANGKOK: -- Following the horror scene at a Bangkok mall on Monday when shoppers were forced to run up a broken escalator to avoid getting stabbed by pieces of metal, the Elevator Association of Thailand has given its expert opinion on what caused it.Accidents on escalators, including the fatal ones in China, stem from the use of substandard parts and lack of proper maintenance, according to Adisai Taengtong, secretary-general of the Elevator Association. The elevator expert added that maintenance should be undertaken by the contractors who installed the escalators because they are familiar with the product. However, most shopping malls or commercial buildings use freelance entrepreneurs to save on cost.Adisai insisted that a standard escalator is strong enough to hold the weight of 500 - 600 kilograms per square meter.Full story: http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2015/08/05/pro-tip-expert-advice-how-use-escalators-- Coconuts Bangkok 2015-08-05RELATED TOPIC:Escalator tries to eat shoppers at Bangkok mallhttp://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/845710-escalator-tries-to-eat-shoppers-at-bangkok-mall/
thesetat2013 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Using substandard parts and failing to do proper maintenance! That doesn't sound like Thailand at all!
jerojero Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Such profound advice: maintenance should be undertaken. Nah! Just run it until it breaks down, then blame it on poor manufacture.
zaphod reborn Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 "Elevator Association of Thailand has given its expert opinion on what caused it." No it hasn't. It's issued a bunch of generic nonsense about how building owners should use the escalator installation contractor as their maintenance vendor, that "freelance" elevator mechanics use substandard parts, and that the fatal accident in China was caused by the use of substandard parts and lack of maintenance. Mr. Adisai then goes on to tell people how to safely use escalators, implying that the escalator malfunction at Wongsawang Town Center was due to improper use by mall shoppers. A proper investigation would state what was the date of the last escalator inspection, what company did the inspection, what were the findings, and when the escalator underwent its last routine maintenance (usually this is done on an annual basis so as to get an operation certificate). A proper investigation would result in a report stating the cause of the escalator malfunction, the safety violations implicated by the malfunction, and recommendations for corrective action, including whether the building owner or escalator maintenance company should be referred to DOSH for further investigation/prosecution.
arrowsdawdle Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Using substandard parts and failing to do proper maintenance! That doesn't sound like Thailand at all! Silly foreigner, Thai escalators are different, just like Thai electricity.
diehard60 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 This is typical of Thai contractors. They buy poor quality equipment and say it is the best only becaus it is so cheap. And they have no real QA programs with qualified people to carry them out.
Johnnie99 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 As said so many times before - you just couldn't make it up!
Bluespunk Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I was hoping this would be advice along the lines of stand to one side and leave room for those of us who do not forget how to walk the minute we step on an escalator to pass by on the other side.
DGS1244 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Maintenance! never heard of it in Thailand for anything.

Oziex1 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I was hoping this would be advice along the lines of stand to one side and leave room for those of us who do not forget how to walk the minute we step on an escalator to pass by on the other side. Yeah, same for the travelators at airports.
norbra Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Escalator maintenance; Monthly inspect for exterior damage and lubricate as required. 6 monthly; check for drive chain stretching (indicated by noises top and bottom)adjust if necessary. Annually; check and report by qualified person for normal wear and tear and any damage to steps, wheels, handrails and floor plates. This should be revised for use in LOS
rtco Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Recently published Thai instructions for using an escalator ... you put your left leg in, your left leg out, in out in out shake it all about, do the escaltorkokee and your turn around, that's what it's all about.
natway09 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I thought they had to have regular systematic mainenance certificates like lifts ? Which government dept is responsible for the above? Get on it Mr General!!!!!!!
Paul Laycock Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Reading that - would you now get in a Thai lift?
Reigntax Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Well if it was made in China or Thailand and it involves equipment quality is will be cheap and crap. The Thai people will soon learn what the rest of the world knows with the new Chinese railways.
sandmike Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I was hoping this would be advice along the lines of stand to one side and leave room for those of us who do not forget how to walk the minute we step on an escalator to pass by on the other side. No, No Bluespunk, you can't do that ... it would cause the escalator to run off balance and wear out on one side .... (Tongue firmly fixed in cheek)
biplanebluey Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Does the Thai language use oxymorons? NO---just MORONS
fang37 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 "MAINTENANCE" - that is what you pay the ex? No pay - time on the inside?
FangFerang Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 The title was enough. I couldn't read it because I feared my brain would have a meltdown.
temujin1234 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 This is what happens when you try and get something as cheaply as possible. << deleted flag counter >>
asdecas Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 So many foreigners, here for so long, and still you do not understand Thai escalators at all. These are most certainly not the same as escalators in your home countries, ignorant farangi. Let me give just one example to illustrate my point: here, we congregate for a chat at the bottom of the 'down' escalator, or at the top of the 'up' escalator. This is to allow people behind us to join our social group, an essential quality in the building of Thainess. As for maintenance, any worthwhile chang bandai leuan worth his prik nam pla knows the expression, "ta man mai khaad, mai tong som.
Lupatria Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 And while we are at it- please tell Thais not to stop at the end of an escalator to enjoy the miracle of arriving on another floor for two minutes while texting the experience to family members.
Alwyn Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 They have an elevator association? wow! How do I join?
Oil Baron Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Preventative maintenance is an "enigma shrouded in mystery" in this country. It's unheard of.
