In whole honesty, I don't think bringing cash has any influence on their decision to grant your bf a visa. Bank books with steady income etc have certainly more weight. But it won't hurt to let him bring it along.

Good Luck

Edit: add. The cash will come in useful when arriving at the airport and if he get questioned by Immigration if he has means to support himself ;)

If there is no sponsor to give financial guarantee and pays all expenses himself he'd need to show that he has atleast 34 euro's per day (this number is different for each Schengen state!). This can be any combination of cash, cheques, bankaccount or other valid payment options indicated on the application firm. Obviously they would still be the most interested in a steady financial cashflow on his bankbook to make likely that the money is actually his and has not been borrowed. If he explains that he has this cash keft from hie previous trip the embassy probably understands it would be silly to deposit it on his bankaccount (converting it to THB and back to euro's again later would be nuts!). The embassy simply needs to be convinced that all money that he coaims to have is actually his, accessable when he is abroad in NL and sufficient enough.
