Scaffolding collapse causes damage, no injuries

PATTAYA:--A scaffolding collapse at an under-construction hotel in North Pattaya caused property damage of more than 100,000 baht, but no injuries.

Following heavy rain, light posts and metal scaffolding crumpled July 26, plummeting through the roof of the next-door P-Tech Air Conditioning. Several air-conditioning units worth about 100,000 baht total were damaged by water.

P-Tech owner Pornthep Phupatwattanakul said he was asleep on the top floor of the building when the incident occurred and it was raining heavily that night with strong wind.

The scaffolding was not stable and couldn’t take the wind and he said Witan Architect Ltd was told as much earlier.

Police have been involved to negotiate compensation.

"Police have been involved to negotiate compensation."

And get a piece of the action. This is purely a civil claims issue, it's not criminal in any way. I would hope that the contractor has insurance coverage. The police should not be involved.

That's just the way it is done here, very pragmatic, very quick and avoids jamming up the courts, only when they can't agree does it go to court. I don't think the police see any of the action, the mediator is usually the pu yai baan and the police write down the agreement which everybody involved signs, after that it is nothing to do with the police unless the agreement is broken.

^^

Indeed. Normally a police report is needed for insurance or other reasons. Nothing unusual in having police involvement.

Okay ,,, show us the bloody scaffolding and see if it was up to scratch with the Health and Safety,,,If not Kick somebody's ass,,, sue him/company until they can't breath !

Lucky it was just the scaffolding the came down.

Usually around these parts, it's the actual building under construction that someone manages to collapse prior to completion, usually taking some number of immigrant construction workers with it.

You don't need police involvement in an auto accident unless there is an injury. Insurance agents handle compensation. The requirement of police reports in Thailand is just another way to funnel money into the pockets of the BIB. Why do they charge for police reports anyway?
