Satun fishermen agree to remove illegal fishing nets, ask govt for assistance

SATUN, 20 August 2015, (NNT) - Local fishermen in Satun province have agreed to remove fishing nets deemed illegal by the Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing (CCCIF), but asked for government assistance in replacing the lost income.

The agreement was made during a meeting between Satun Provincial Fisheries Office and representatives of local fisheries. The fishermen acknowledged the National Council for Peace and Order's (NCPO) 24th decree of 2015, which addresses illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in Thailand.

The NCPO order prompted the CCCIF to ban the use of push nets, net traps, lighted fishing nets and stow nets by all types of fishing boats last month. It classified the tools as environmental hazards.

The fishermen said they would comply with the authority's regulation, but requested the government provide employment assistance to mitigate the opportunity cost.

The Satun Provincial Fisheries Office said it would coordinate with relevant units on the matter. The office also indicated that it would continue its public relations campaign to abolish the use of illegal fishing tools.

What a set of balls these fishermen have.

Meanwhile in the UK older and out of work burglars are requesting the government help them replace large kits of obsolete housebreaking tools with more acceptable items like saws, screwdrivers, hammers and nails in order for them to pursue more legal occupations.

These dickwads didn't need government help in obtaining the illegal nets they've been using for years, but now want government help to get new ones.

Only in Thailand!

couldnt make up this nonsens ... Always somebody else that have to pick up the tab ... Its just so Thailand blink.png

Let me get this right in my head, fish using illegal methods and now agree not to fish illegally only after getting compensation for their illegal activities.....does that sound right?

What's next, drug dealers agreeing to stop dealing drugs if the government pays them for lost income?

They obviously want the government to share the inactive posts with them

Farangs are so critical.

If you don't ask...you don't get.

So bizarre, so ridiculous, so devoid of responsibility, so very Thai. coffee1.gif

Did they also ask to be reimbursed for the slave labor they bought then had to, um, dispose of?

I think the authorities will eventually give the fishermen fishing rods everything is getting so farcical taking away keep nets and the rest of fishing gear doesn't leave them with much .
