PM concerned over heavy rain and landslide in 21 provinces next week

BANGKOK, 29 August 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DDPM) to prepare assistance for northern and northeastern people who may be affected by heavy rain and landslide next week.

Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the PM was concerned over people in 21 northern and northeastern provinces where heavy rain was expected from 30 August - 3 September 2015. The PM emphasized that those in disaster-prone areas must be warned well in advance and must strictly follow the government’s instructions in order to reduce the risk of losses.

The Meteorological Department has predicted a monsoon trough in the upper North and Northeast and a stronger southwest monsoon over the upper part of the Andaman Sea and the lower part of the Gulf of Thailand. As a result, increasing rain is expected all over the country with isolated heavy rain in the North and Northeast.

The provincial DDPM in the 21 provinces have stepped up flood-prevention measures in the city areas and tourist sites. “Mister Warning” in at-risk villages will work with special disaster and flood prevention centers to timely warn the villagers.
