Sira to return his Bt1.7m salary today
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Sira Jenjaka, a member of the National Reform Council, yesterday vowed to return all his salary and benefits for failing to push for passage of the draft constitution against what he claimed was intense lobbying.

He also said he would sue two fellow NRC members - Wanchai Sornsiri and Amorn Wanich-wiwatana - for declaring that they would overturn the draft and thus cause damage to the government.

After the NRC rejected the draft charter, he said he was ready to refund Bt1.7 million today because the 11 months that the NRC worked to compose the new constitution ended up in vain, resulting in the loss of about Bt1 billion for the government.

"I urge dissenting members to show their responsibility. I feel sorry for the public, as this is the best constitution for the nation but they don't even get a chance to read it.

"As far as I know, there was strong lobbying to reject the draft," he said.

The vote came out this way because of four reasons, he said.

First, there was an announcement while the draft was still unfinished that they would overturn the draft, and second, some had admitted that they would vote to disagree with the draft even though it was good because they wanted to avoid conflict.

Third, two NRC members lobbied against the draft, claiming that it was on orders from the higher authority, and last, some despised the draft and voted to kill it.

"I would like to ask people to remember the names of the NRC members who voted down the draft and see whether they become members of the reform mobilising council in the future," he added.

Ex-NRC member to donate his 1.7 million baht salaries to charitable foundations

BANGKOK: -- A former member of the National Reform Council who earlier offered to return all his salaries and fringe benefits worth 1.7 million baht to the parliament if the draft constitution was rejected has decided to donate the money to all charitable foundations.

The office of the secretary-general of the House of Representatives received to accept the money from Mr Seera Jenjakha, pointing out there is no regulation allowing the office to receive the returned salaries and allowances.

After the rejection of the office to take back his money, Seera said he would donate it to any charitable foundations which are interested to use the money for public interests with the exception of Thamma-isara foundation of Buddha Isara, the abbot of Wat Om-noi, and political organizations.

Seera also urged his former colleagues to follow his footstep.

Asked whether he would accept an offer for a seat at the steering committee for reforms which is to be set up, the ex-NRC member quickly said he was willing to accept any offer.

This sounds like a scorned man venting his frustration. He wants the public to know the names of those two NRC members. He also said that it is a shame that the public did not get a chance to read it. Any yet the public is supposed to vote on it in a referendum? At the same time public discussion of the draft charter is prohibited? What gives?

I also believe there is a need to re-evaluate how much the public has lost. I sincerely believe his figure of 1 billion baht is GROSSLY under-estimated.
