NRC no-voters face complaint

Ex-National Reform Council member Sira Jenjaka tries to return the Bt1.7 million he earned as council member.

BANGKOK: -- A COMPLAINT has been filed against National Reform Council (NRC) members who voted against the draft charter on grounds that they voted "no" because of conflicts of interest.

The Association of Organisations for the Defence of the Constitution filed the complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) against the 135 NRC members who rejected the draft charter.

Spearheaded by its chairman, Srisuwan Janya, a political and environmental activist, the association demanded the NACC probe the NRC members. "Before the voting date, some NRC members revealed that those who vote down the charter will have a seat on the new reform-driving panel," Srisuwan claimed.

"So, the charter vote-down could be deemed a conflict of interest."

He demanded the NACC press charges against the members and NRC chairman Thienchay Kiranandana, who abstained for Sunday's vote, for breaching their duty by the former voting down the charter, and the latter for not taking any action against those who campaigned against the draft.

He also called on the NACC to retrieve the money the members received while on the council and any other privileges they may have enjoyed.

Meanwhile, NRC's Boonlert Kacha-yuthadej said a farewell dinner party was scheduled for last night, with some 200 members going on a Chao Phraya River cruise.

He said the party was also a celebration for members who had birthdays in September and for the four military officers from the council who had been promoted to general.

Some reformers who voted yes to the charter would not be attending as they could still be upset about the result, he said.

Those attending included Thienchay and Tassana Boonthong, the vice chairman of the council, though charter drafter chief Bowornsak Uwanno has not responded.

In a related development, secretary to the House of Representatives, Jaray Panpruang, said Sira Janejaka's wish to return the Bt1.7 million he was paid as an NRC member could be done in the form of a donation. Jaray said the money would be deemed national revenue and returned to the Treasury. Sira had pledged to return the money if the draft was rejected.

Ah yes, the clowns of Thai politics appear again. So they want to charge those who voted "no". Should they also charge those voting "yes" for a conflict of interest also.

This country has no hope while the intelligence of those appointed to represent the peoples interest is on par with an earthworm. No offence meant to all the earthworms!

It's not the "no" vote that's being complained about, per se, albeit the report sounds like it is.

The problem is the "Nays", at least some of them, revealed their intention to vote "no" before they had even read the draft, indicating a pre-determined position and a vote for political reasons rather than on the merits (or otherwise) of the draft.

Their vote means nothing if it was not in consideration of the draft.

"The Association of Organisations for the Defence of the Constitution"

Another offshoot of what?........The Democrat Party?...The PDRC?......The Junta....Who?

These Instantly created groups have no history...But are presented in this quote as being something established and recognized.

But a larger question..Who are the pro-democracy forces in Thailand?...... Those in the camp of the Democrat Party, Junta, PDRC and all their kind, have nothing but scorn for their opposites. Don't give the UDD/PTP any respect as legitimate representatives of anything resembling Democratic practices.......But they certainly cannot claim it for themselves given their history, most recently supporting the decidedly anti-democracy PDRC, Democrat Party and the coup.

It would be interesting to see someone debating otherwise...Trying to catagorize the PDRC, Democrat Party, Junta and their phoney path to Democracy narrative as being Democracy minded..

So if the UDD/PTP side is not given credit for being Democracy intentioned......certainly the above is not either, given their history...That suggests Thailand is devoid of Democracy focussed forces.

I don't believe it.

As imperfect as Thai Democracy forces may be, Thailand is not devoid of it....Given the choice of granting the Democracy mantle to the PTP/UDD or the Junta/PDRC/Democrat Party, I would come down on the side of the former. They have always supported elections, won elections only to be coup'ed out of governance, and are now focussed on preventing a very undemocratic constitution.

This debate isn't even close.

Members of the NRC recieved 1.7 million for their work. That is a good payday. How many members on this panel, and why do they need to be paid so much?

135 member panel, and that's virtually 60 million baht, and we have a contemptible charter that is no doubt going to have to be re-written over the next year.

Oink oink, move over, i need to wet my snout oink oink.

The Association of Organisations for the Defence of the Constitution?

The "what"?

"Bloody splinter group."

More like a Monty Python skit every day here.

Another great example of Thai "Democracy" ....

One must be carefull not to measure Thai Democracy against a perfectionist model......Everyone knows it is far removed.

But that doesn't mean there are no Democratic elements in the Thai political landscape...In fact it may exceed some other countries in that regard.

But you are right.......Those who are currently messing around with a constitution to the excxlusion of those from a different political persuasion, are a sorry representation of "Democracy"...There is much better in Thailand than them, but those are carefully excxluded for reasons that are self-evident.

"Before the voting date, some NRC members revealed that those who vote down the charter will have a seat on the new reform-driving panel," Srisuwan claimed.

Quite possible, Mr P has probably run out of accomplices to appoint so they'll likely have to re-cycle at least a few.

Wouldn't surprise me to see many of the same faces in for another round of trough-diving. I see that many of the down-voters were armed forces.

QED I think.

Another act in the soap-opera that is Thailand. The sound of distant thunder will once more prove to have been only some local piss and wind.

Long running Lakorn, predating TV, called "Siam Democracy" replete with "good people"who tell everyone what to do, ghosts, conniving upstarts, people in uniform, peasants happy to stay down on the farm and dark-skinned household servants.

They are forming a new panel I hear, Council for Unity and National Treason Suppresion.

But it needs initials to legitimize it.....How about (Council for Unity and National Treason Suppression)

Awright, I understand why that is deleted...So have some fun.....make your own initial and see wot ya get.

Yes, thats why I didn't use the acronym in my post..... wink.png

Edit for spelling

Admire Khun Srisuwan's guts for taking on the NRC. He also challenged the legitimacy of the NLA and conflict of interest in appointing friends, classmates, relatives or people close to the NCPO to the NLA. Before anyone can accused him of Thaksin paid goon; he also went after the Yingluck's administration for the handling of the flood as chairman of the Stop Global Warming Thailand Association.
