how to play flv files

Featured Replies

Could on my old dino 'puter,

can't on this 6 year old 'puter.

On the dino pc...

IFRC i was using VLC.

Perhaps I was using Media Player Classic,

with FFmpeg and the K-Lite codec pac.

VLC v2.1.5 will not currently play flv.

No codec pac's are installed

Win media player will not play them either.

OS is Win7.1

I do not want to re-encode these files.

What do you recommend...

- install K-Lite and MPC

- DL a FLV player, if so which one?

I play .flv files with VLC with no problems and no extra codecs on Win7. Do you have the latest VLC?

Umm, likely not.

I mentioned that I use VLC v2.1.5.

So should I just update VLC?

  • Author

I updated VLC to 2.2.5.

No joy, does not play flv.

U sure u don't have codec pack installed?

Or is there soms settings in VLC that needs a tweak.

You don't need vlc for that too do you have K lite codec player? Or it's called media player classic. It come along with the window. Try to search in run tap

@KhunBENQ, yep they all play in VLC

to me that indicates I've a old ver of the flv, or it's corrupted.

@Typingdog,

As stated I've not installed K-Lite nor MPC.

Yet...

Do you have any links to MPC and K-Light.

The pure source, I'm getting too much from google.

Better choice than the build in Microsoft media player which is very limited is Media Player Classic and FFDShow codec. VLC should be all you need though and the only video player I use except for Potplayer. The latter is nice for playlists and video controls.

Lol sorry I really didn't read.

I don't understand why your vlc not work.

Potplayer is good. Give it a try :)

I installed K-Lite (standard)

and avoided the bloatware...

It comes with MPC-HC.

I did not install FFMpeg.

No joy.

10 of 40+ flv will not play, the others will,

"can not render file" is the error in MPC-HC.

I see no point in installing 'Potplayer'

Those 10 files must be corrupted and

a shame 'cause one can't find them again.

Thanks to those whom helped.

Have you tried flash? Thats what the fl in flv stands for (v being video).

But if vlc wont play quite likely corrupt video anyway.

Vlc does not need or use codec packs like klite, plays all out of box.

QuickTime or VLC both should work if apps are updated to latest versions

5 year old vlc played flv files fine.

This is an old thread and don`t know if you have this sorted or not?

I am guessing that your FLV files are either not genuine FLV files or damaged or corrupted. It`s that`s the case then I doubt there is much you can do about it.

You could try downloading a free video format converter, there are scores of them available and see if your FLV will convert to other formats, MP4, AVI or WMV and that`s about all I can suggest.

In VLC Player go to Tools- Preferences - Set Associations - select all.
