Walking Around Phuket?

Recommended Posts

im going to thailand in a few weeks.. considering all that is going on in bangkok with the coup we have decided to get a connecting flight to take us down to Phuket (rather than styaing in bangkok at all) and will probably spend most of our time travelling around phuket for almost 2 weeks backpaking..

the fisrt place we are staying will most likely be in Patong (we already have arranged airport transfer to our hotel) but after that we will be wanting to see more of Phuket.. can we walk to most of the other beaches on the west coast?? By looking at a map i cannot tell have far the distance is to walk.

What are some good places in Phuket for backpackers to see and do???

Any info is much appreciated! thanx

My memories of Phuket include the hills, up down.. up down.. not sure I'd want to walk up and down the hills all day, especially in the heat..

I'm going to move this to the Phuket section, you are more likely to get some better info there.

You cannot. You can walk from Rawaii to Nai Harn (one of the nicer beachers). But as you go north, each beach is separated by long winding mountain roads. By the time you hit Patong from Karon, you will want to return to Bkk.

And, nothing is going on in BKK. Try to enjoy yourself there. It is a fun place.

Echo Sniper,

Really nothing has changed in BKK, so if you've never been, then absolutely see the Big Mango. Phuket is great but not really the ideal walking place, very hilly with mostly areas that you'll need to walk on roads with scooters and trucks that drive quickly and erraticall, at least in the southern half. Don't know about the north.

"Walking" might be a challenge with some of the roads. However, it is only a few KMs by road from Patong to Kamala. Then fromKamala to Surin as about 5kms ... at Surin it gets flat all the way through BangTao etc.

Also there is inexpensive local busses in the daytime. 20 baht into town from Patong and there you can hop another one to another beach.

you cant really walk its too far ,but renting a small bike is the answer to get around the island to quieter beaches and some good small guest houses can be found . take a good padlock to secure them from thieves you dont want to have to pay for a new bike if it gets stolen and many do get stolen !

Nostrel ---- re: bikes ---- do you actually know of "many getting stolen" in Phuket?

Had bikes for years in phuket never had one stolen, I work on the fact that there are thousands here and you have to be unlucky to lose one. One tip tho if you rent don't leave your passport, its has been known for the bike to be stolen !! and its a case of pay up or no passport! !!! get a copy of your picture page and plastic it. (very useful) :o

How far can you walk in Phuket?

That is the silliest topic title i have ever seen.

People have walked to both poles and across the sahara.

I wouldnt have thought Phuket would offer much of a chalenge.

Backpacking around Phuket eh. OOOOOOOOOO> Arent you the great adventurers!

Seriously. Get a bus between beaches during day light hours, or rent a motorcycle or even a bycycle........but walk??? Why would you even think about it? Its just not worth it.

to get a bus directly between beaches is impossible ,you have to go via the town which could take you 2 hours to get from say patong to kata.no motor bike then tuk-tuk only option, pretty expensve though. :o
