OK I get that Turnbull is pro marriage equality. Is that going to be enough for that to happen soon? People familiar with Australian politics please comment. Why would any advanced nation want to trail behind the US on such issues?

A plebiscite for gay marriage being legislated is currently scheduled for after the next election in late 2016; cost is estimated to be AUD160 million. It is believed the majority will vote positively.
