Special Report: PM Prayut Chan-o-cha’s visit to New York

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has reaffirmed that Thailand would move forward in accordance with its roadmap and reform plan announced earlier.

In his meeting with members of the US-ASEAN Business Council in New York during the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister said that according to the roadmap, Thailand will hold a general election in 2017.

During the period before the general election, he said, the Government would lay foundations for all areas of reform, increase the country’s competitiveness, facilitate investments, and develop transport infrastructure and logistics. Various rules and regulations will be improved to higher standards and Thai workforce, especially skilled labor, will be developed further.

The Government intends to tackle problems that have accumulated for many years, such as those concerning human trafficking and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. It has amended various related laws and regulations to deal effectively with these problems. Anti-human trafficking has been declared as part of the national agenda and all relevant agencies must accelerate their work and be strict in handling this issue.

The Prime Minister hoped that members of the US-ASEAN Business Council and the American Chamber of Commerce would help spread information about the strong intention of Thailand in fighting the IUU fishing problem and create better understanding with US importers of fishery products. He stated that Thailand’s national reform would be carried out along with suppression against corruption. The Government has taken serious action to fight corruption. It has set up the National Anti-Corruption Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, and appointed a committee to check and follow up on the spending of the national budget. Moreover, the Government has also mandated construction sector transparency (CoST) in large government projects.

Regarding education development, an education policy and development committee has been formed, with the participation of education experts. The committee is responsible for giving suggestions on education reform in order to upgrade the quality of education at all levels.

The Prime Minister said that the Government has a policy to develop labor skills in the region and in special economic zones, so that a workforce will be produced in accordance with the labor market demand. Any foreign companies and educational institutions wishing to invest in the special economic zones will be provided with many privileges, such as tax reduction.

He said that the Government also attached great importance to economic reform, especially efforts to enhance the country’s competitiveness. It will create clusters for industries that have good potential and super clusters for future industries that use high technology.

He added that Thailand would move forward under the democratic system, with stability and sustainable human, economic, and social development.

Can anyone on TV supply a website or citation for the situation where someone, let's take the head of the current Thai administration, is allowed to attend the United Nations but, like Thailand's head of the current administration, is banned from the United States[, the UK and the EU]. To give another example, Mugabe has been diligent in attending UN / FAO meetings in Rome while banned from the EU.

Is Thailand's representative limited to going from the Thai Consulate to the UN? Can he go shopping at the Apple store on 5th Avenue, miles from the UN? A small question but a large principle of international law.

Sanctioned foreign nationals participating in the September UN General Assembly meeting in New York City are subject to travel restrictions while in the United States by the USA government:

"Certain members of delegations to the UN are required to notify us or obtain permission prior to travel outside of a 25-mile radius of Columbus Circle in New York City,"

The USA has not sanctioned any of the Thai UN delegation but if it had they could still shop in NYC.

Only if there's not a school within 300 meters of the establishment.
