Four missing crewmen of Phatra Marine 5 ship found inside engine room



BANGKOK: -- The Phatra Marine 5 container ship that capsized in the Gulf after it was hit by large waves and strong winds from the recent ‘Vamco’ tropical storm was salvaged from seabed with bodies of four missing crewmen inside the engine room.

The ship which sank on the night of September 19 along with its cargoes in over 80 containers was jacked up with inflatable pontoons and 200-ton crane from the seabed.

As the vessel emerged on the water surface, salvage workers of the AZ Underwater Works Co then pumped air into the ballast tanks of the vessel, and drain water out of the vessel to make it float.

It was later towed back to Soi Bangpoo 8 pier on the shore where saddened relatives of the missing crewmen were awaiting for progress in the search.

After reaching the shore, search was conducted inside the ship and four missing crewmen were found inside the engine room. All had their life jackets worn.

They were identified as Nawin Suwanpayak, 62, the navigator, Kukan Wangsuk, 38, the steersman, Thanadol Pangwiset, 27, the chief engineer, and Sompol Chaochiengkwang, 52, the mechanics.

An Investigation committee has been set up and will conclude the cause of the sinking in one week so that compensation could be paid to their relatives respectively.

The container vessel sank at a location at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River between Samut Prakarn and Chonburi territorial waters on the night of September 19.
