The controversial private taxi service UBER has avoided being declared illegal in the UK.

Undercutting their monopoly more like. Time free enterprise dealt those crabby cabbies a death blow. And if they survive and make less money, diddums.

Excellent UK! these entrenched anti competitive monopolies need to go. Enter innovative free market competition that provides a better and cost effective more effective service. Shake off unnecessary Government regulation and Tax collection. Want to drive people around, got a car and a smartphone well off you go competitive small business and more power to you. Can't wait for UberHealthServices. A real free market health care sector driving cost down and providing a better more effective service for the consumer. A real revolution in the capitalist truly competitive free market economy. Back to grass roots capitalism.

Hooray for Uber!

Maybe Black cabs should offer their passengers a fair option using the same app? No more competitive advantage.

I used Uber in Johannesburg. It works and is fantastic as well as cheaper than regular taxis. Just like everywhere else, the taxi drivers want them banned because they charge 20 ZAR vs 70 ZAR by taxi for a short journey. Does anyone remember the Luddites?
