Big Bang Boom !

Yes, after leaving Thailand on 18 Sept I have finally arrived in AssCrackistan.

And what a welcome I and the others in my group received. An hour after arriving one of our soldiers was killed by an anti-personnel mine (while on a patrol off camp). :D

We had a ceremony today as his body was loaded on a plane for the trip back to Canada.

10 hours after arriving we had a rocket attack on the camp. Fortunately no one was injured. The bad guys have been stepping up their attacks lately, but the good news is their aim still sucks.

Hotter than hel_l during the days here, but the evenings cool down quite nicely. The next couple of months shoudn't be too bad as we head into the short winter season.

A few small differences from the camp we had in Kabul. My company isn't running affairs like we did up there, so we have to live with different rules and standards but it's not too bad.

One real nice difference is that all the tents and offices have air-conditioners, unlike Kabul ! On the other hand, there is a strict "no alcohol" policy here, and under these conditions that is probably a good thing.

A couple of bad differences. One is that my tent is across the road from the flight-line. That means I get lullabyed to sleep every night to the sounds of jets and helicopters winding up and taking off. The other nasty difference is the sewage plant is located about a kilometer away and the wind seems to blow from there to here all the time. :o

I'm using a connection to a WiFi network set up by the Dutch contingent, but it's a little too far away from my tent. The connection is spotty at best and quite slow. I've heard that we are getting a new WiFi system up and running within the next couple of weeks which should fix that problem.

Meanwhile, I can't get into detail about what I'm doing here (nothing nasty though), but apparently I will be kept quite busy most of the time. Just as well, as there isn't a lot to do around here after work anyways. I won't get my first holiday until some time in the new year, and it looks like I'll probably miss Songkran as well. :D

I know a lot of you don't see that as a bad thing, but I had fun !

That's about it for now. Got to post this before I lose the connection again (it's gone off twice since I started typing).

Talk to you later eh !

(Note: I tried to post this last night and the connection was down. I saved the post to a file and went to bed.

About a half an hour later we had another rocket attack warning. Nothing happened though, and after a few minutes we got the "All Clear" and were able to shed our protective gear and go back to bed)

I know we don't always see eye to eye mate but good luck, your doing a great job there.

Stay safe and remember Thailand is waiting for your safe return.

Cheers.
