METV Visa - Vientiane, Laos. It's official.

Recommended Posts

I thought one of the criteria was a letter from ones employer, which might be a bit hard if one has just spent nine months in Thailand.

That point is a bit of a stickler, not many companies give an employee 6 to 9 months off. If you are working online, well, you need a lawyers letter or bank managers letter (this was from Indonesian Embassy for a tourist visa).

And if your UK self employed or Limited company ?

Yes good pont.

These are all gray areas and question marks of which we will only have answers to when people are actually going to apply and hopefully report.

I'm quite interested to see what the requirements for METV will be on the Thai Embassy UK website, hopefully it should be updated next week sometime. If they insist on £3500 to £4000 in the bank for 6 months and letters from employers, then I won't be bothering with it and I'll get a SETV instead.

The fact that you do not reside permanently in the UK disqualifies you from applying by post.

What is being suggested may or may not be illegal, but it would be, at the very least, obtaining a visa dishonestly.

We aren't sure of that yet. It might be that their wording means that one needs to be a naturalised citizen with permanent residence status, if not a UK national (who already obviously have that status).

The logic being then bank statements and employment proof if asked for would be easily verified.

And/or their way of ensuring one has an address in the UK to return the passport to.

In which case what he's suggesting isn't dishonest.

I linked a webpage earlier to you saying UK nationals never lose their indefinite leave to remain (aka permanent residence) no matter how long they're out of the country:

http://www.visalogic.net/uk/indefinite-leave-to-remain/4/50

And here's another link that states 'To qualify as a UK or Irish resident, your country of permanent residence is where you are a UK or Irish citizen with a passport, a residential home address in the UK or Ireland and unrestricted right of entry back into this country once you depart. You may be currently at home, travelling or residing in another country at the time'

http://service.worldnomads.com/customer/portal/articles/1063080-what-is-my-country-of-residence-

Let's wait and see.

A UK nationals right to indefinite leave to stay is not the issue. That is an undisputed fact but not relevant to postal applications to the Thai embassy in the UK.

According to a very clear statement on the website anyone (legal residential status being irrelevant) must reside permanently in the UK to apply by post.

The address that the passport is returned to within the UK is also not relevant. The problem you have is that the application form asks for your present address and your permanent address. I am a UK national with a right to indefinitely leave to stay in the UK but i live (reside) permanently in Thailand and my present address is in Thailand.

When you apply for your METV via post from Cambodia or Hong Kong, having lived here months/years, what will you give on the application as your present and permanent addresses?

How is it very clear when 'must permanently reside' might mean what I wrote above. It's not out of the realm of possibility. Can't we just wait and see instead of stating categorically that people will be disqualified if they apply by post? We all know reality often differs from what's written on consulate websites, certain things often don't get enforced (posters here have reconfirmed that over the phone), and they're written by non native English speakers (the page is full of errors). If it was perfectly clear they'd write no postal applications from outside the UK.

That was not introduced. It is, however, already law that any overstayer can be jailed for up to 2 years although not enforced.

Immigration proposed the new bans last year and although not enforced yet it has hung around since, and i don't see immigration, especially now they have the endorsement of the MoI, backing down until it's introduced.

I know it didn't end up actually being introduced, but that was the headline in newspapers - 'jail time introduced for any overstay over 42 days'. Way more extreme than 2015. Just goes to show that policies come and go when Thailand realises it's losing money, we've seen it time and time again. It's not out of the realm of possibility that next year there's still no overstay blacklisting and they'll be handing out free tourist visas to get people back.

Interesting: If Ho Chi Mihn has specifically requested resident cards, Hanoi is still vague...

http://www.thaiembassy.org/hanoi/th/services/5605

For Cambodia it's easy to get a Ordinary visa (E). So far i know there is no permanent residency permit available. But even then, without a letter of employment it's pointless.

JSpill..

there is one major difference, that being that this is not a red or yellow government.

These army guys are making laws that future governments will most probably not be able to, nor even want to change.

The army has won Thai peoples confidence on many decisions.

If you think they will relax the new laws for overstayers for some reason, or indeed change any immigration policies made now, you are living in Disneyland.

Nothing has come out of the announcement from the thread 2 weeks ago, so there are no 'new laws yet'. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/865576-pm-prayuth-to-decide-on-tough-new-penalties-for-foreigners-who-overstay/

Same 'army guys' made an announcement in mid 2014, nothing became of that either.

I don't think they'll relax overstay laws, no. But that 2010 announcement that didn't happen either, was even worse.

I must pay taxes in my home-country, even though I haven't been there in years. My "permanent address" is, therefore, in my home country, where I pay taxes on my income, and where my business also resides. Most importantly, I do not have "legal residency" in any other location.

If "present address" is a separate form-field, it will be interesting to see what happens if one puts a Thailand or Hong Kong address in that spot. In Laos, I have been directed to leave that field blank. The attention to this field may vary by consulate; it all depends on what "must have" conditions have been specified by the MFA. I hope someone publishes the instructions sent to the consulates, soon.

IMO, what they are most concerned with, is that you have 200K baht (consistently), and some sort of "job" - be that your own company, or otherwise, which refills one's coffer. For some applicants, the "applicant will go home" factor may be an issue - but this is less of an issue for those who would clearly loose money, by seeking employment here. Recall that these rules were standardized for world-wide application, as per the official announcement of the METV.

Also, it is important to note, that one can own an overseas-business and not be "employed" by it. That might be an important distinction to emphasize, though "policy" seems to be to ignore and/or not-prosecute those caught for "remote work," as is often the case with anachronistic applications of laws, the world over.

The serial troll posters out in force. Whats the big deal. Seems that the new metv prety much only available in your home country. Very sad yes. But move on. Find another alternative to remain in los long term or pack your bags. I for one hope people living here not on non imm o etc can remain. What has 20 pages of nonesense actually solved. The usual suspects picking people up on trival stuff re tems and the boring quoting consulate site info. Get a life .....its over. Lets start new thread to support and suggest how some younger folk can stay in los

Yeah you could pretty much leave vast sections of the form blank and still get approved.

Well we had a member here phone and up and be told that rules will be very relaxed for G7 nations. Good info but still hearsay until totally confirmed, because it's the word of one member of reception staff, right? Your email reply would be the same. I think we all know what is said publicly and what actually happens are two different things.

What are all these posts about mailing an application for metv to home country.

Maybe its a uk thing but it wont work. First of all you cannot mail your passport while you are stil not in your home country. Your stamps will show where you currently are. Also you will not have an entry stamp to los to activate your metv. Also you would be living in thailand for a period without a passport. What is the plan here

As posted there are about quite a few threads about it spanning back years, and the general consensus (eventually) is that it doesn't break any laws from Thailand's perspective. You just need to leave Thailand to have the exit stamp. The US and UK don't stamp you in or out, neither does Hong Kong, so stamps don't necessarily show where a person is.

Interesting: If Ho Chi Mihn has specifically requested resident cards, Hanoi is still vague...

http://www.thaiembassy.org/hanoi/th/services/5605

"As a general rule, a completed and signed visa application form (s), photographs (s), passport (valid for no less than 6 months), travel tickets in and out of Thailand and visa fee are compulsory."

Surprised if Lao consulates start asking for more than this (no matter what they list as requirements).

If your not a Thai citizen you have no say, in fact even a Thia citizen has no say, but at least they are a citizen of Thailand. Anyone on a visa in Thailand is a tolerated guest and no more than that...

Drunk fool, spelling mistakes too!

If a Thai Consulate in the USA wanted proof that someone was indeed in the USA and not just their passport when applying for a visa, they could do something like this again using the Portland Honorary Consulate General:

This is a copy of today's The Oregonian newspaper Front page:

On a separate piece of paper, please write in your handwriting the big headline from the same day as the postmark of your US Postal Service visa application mailing to our office AND sign it with the same signature as on your Visa Application.
They could also just call you on your telephone and, regardless that a US phone number via roaming might connect to you in Asia or elsewhere, ask you a few questions and determine that you are not in USA.

And if your UK self employed or Limited company ?
...

If you own a limited company you should have no problem getting your accountant to produce a letter confirming you are an employee (more accurately Director) of the company as you are one (your accountant will be filing all the same returns for you as any other company does for their employees & Companies House records will also show you as a Director of the company).

Am sure something similar will be available if you're (officially, I.e. not working "cash-in-hand") self employed via some other mechanism (e.g. An "Umbrella" company).

I take it you have no problem with #5 which for me is a bigger problem than having to go back to the UK (given I do so twice a year to visit family anyway). Edited by JB300
