What's needed to get the first 5 year drivers licence? Advice...?

I know there are postings in the Thai visa file but many seem out of date..

I have a one year licence which is expiring around Dec 25.

I had a non immigrant O visa from which I've gotten the 'retirement visa' which is current.

I have read differing reports on what documentation is required for Chiang Mai.

Firstly....do I need a 'proof of residence' certificate.....even if I can produce a long lease agreement for a house?

And....can k apply before the licence expires or do I have to wait until after (which seems odd and illegal) as some posts suggest..

And ...do I need a medical certificate?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated...

Yes, you need both the certificate of residence and a medical certificate. No, the lease or copy thereof won't suffice (I don't remember what I needed to get the residence certificate but likely had my lease and copy on hand for that).

Based on advice, I waited to just after my 1-year license expired to get the 5-year license. Not sure why but it was no problem. They'll run the 5-year from your next birthday so, if you have a birthday coming up, wait until the day after that and you should get almost get 6 years.

From a post I made a few months ago about renewal in Pattaya office. I went about a week before the 1 year license was due to expire. While immigration accepted the license as the basis for the RC letter, I did have a letter from the Condo manager on their letterhead but the lady who makes the copies and completes the forms said the would take the license address.

I recently renewed from 1 year temporary to 5 year with:

-Copy of passport and visa pages.

-Original passport to show them.

-Old licenses

-Copies of old licenses (needed because they give you back the old one when cancelled and keep the copies)

-Medical certificate from any clinic

-Resident Certificate from Immigration. I do not own a residence so it may be different. Oddly, Immigration used a copy of my temporary license which shows your address as the basis for the Resident Certificate. You can try that if address is unchanged but suggest you take other documents as well.

Medical Certificate no longer needed.

Then the rules have changed this year. When I went out early in the year to get my first 5-year, I went without a medical certificate because somebody here said you didn't need one. They sent me away to get one.
