CHIANG RAI, 30 December 2015 (NNT) – The northernmost province of Chiang Rai has kicked off the tea festival held on Doi Mae Salong mountain.

The festival, now in its 20th year, is held annually to promote winter tourism and the local tea industry, using the province's the multi-ethnic society as its unique selling point. The festival is being co-organized by the provincial office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and tea growers on Doi Mae Salong in Mae Fah Luang district.

A large number of tourists took part in the event, enjoying the exotic cultural shows offered by the seven ethnic groups based in Doi Mae Salong. Visitors could also taste and shop for aromatic teas against a backdrop of the mountain village in winter.

Organizers will hold a New Year's Eve countdown activity, as well as the world’s only tea leaf almsgiving on New Year's Day.

The festival is taking place at Ban Santi Khiri School from today until January 2.
