Chiang Rai tightens security in face of tourist surge

CHIANG RAI, 31 December 2015 (NNT) – The Military and police sectors have jointly boosted security at border areas in Chiang Rai Province to handle a surge in New Year vacationers.

Police have increased patrols around frequently-visited spots in the Golden Triangle in Chiang Saen District to ensure safety for visitors. Most of them plan to see the large golden Buddha image and take a sightseeing boat trip on the Mekong River.

The Mekong River peacekeeping unit has dispatched 30 additional security officials to provide land and water patrols and has also set up checkpoints at crime-prone areas to intercept any introduction of illegal items.

Meanwhile, the border crossing area in Mae Sai District is bustling with tourists. The Mae Sai Chamber of Commerce has estimated that the number of people crossing the border could reach tens of thousands during the New Year festivities, generating more than one billion baht in financial transactions.

Sorry but 30 additional security officials is nothing in relation to 20,000 or more visitors.

And in the same breath how much money they make off the tourists.
