Do i need a helmet

Featured Replies

Heres 1 for all those members who know about Thai law.

I am taking delivery of a 3 wheel mobility scooter. At first glance it looks like a motorbike.

16 inch wheels/2 speeds up to 15 mph. lights/ indicators/ auto braking.

Do i need a motorbike license or not/ do i need a helmet?

Pretty sure you don't need a licence as it's mobility had a look through (quick look) and can't see anything but as it's only up to 15mph or is that 15mph. I would say no licence required and as for helmet I would say up to you me in thailand yes I would. But surley the suppliers of this could and should give you the answers they must know.

Given there is rarely any consistency in Thailand for laws etc, it would entirely depend on the boys in brown in your area.

I would suggest asking them directly, then there is no, "but it says", or he said she said, nonsense.

Scooter was purchased from a TV member, it had already been shipped over from USA.So asking company in the states is not an option.

IN reply to CharlieH, Asked to local policemen, got 2 different answers, yes and no.

Sorry 2 local policemen

Well in that case did the seller have a licence. Or go along to traffic office and see they should know

Asked to local policemen, got 2 different answers, yes and no.

In that case, I'd say, you might possibly be quite creative in the choice of your helmet wear.

Keep a couple of hundred baht spare,Thais are generally forgiving to older westerners especially those like yourself with a disability and I can't imagine your going to encounter to much hassle.

From a safety perspective if you feel you wish to wear a helmet then do so,the issue isn't with your scooter and it's speed but those around you.

I cannot ask the seller, man who imported it passed away.

Man selling it was helping the Thai lady who was left the scooter.

At first glance it looks like a motorbike.

Is it similar to the one below?

I am still trying to find some reliable source.

Fact is that I can not remember ever having seen a 3 wheel drive with a helmet.

The scooter i question is an xtreme 420 made in USA .

Sorry i do not know how to post a link on here.

If anyone can help me with that i would be grateful.

Electrical motor, battery driven.

Clearly recognizable as a vehicle for handicapped.

Just bet that you don't need a helmet.

Not found a source so far.

You could always consider using a cycle helmet. That's probably adequate for the speeds your doing and lightweight too.

Yes stoneyboy that i the 1.

I do not have to act handicapped, i already am, paraplegic.

When i go to use the scooter, i will use the electric winch which we have fitted to lift me in the car.

As you would normally drive this on the footpath, I sincerely doubt you need a helmet (by law) for this.

On any bike 2 wheels or 3....doesn't take much to come unstuck.....do you need a hemet ? Do you need a brain is the real question

AFAIK, from a legal perspective the law says people riding 2-wheel vehicles must wear helmets.

That's why people on motorcycles with sidecars and yamaha tricity riders are often seen without helmets.

You could always consider using a cycle helmet. That's probably adequate for the speeds your doing and lightweight too.

I was thinking exactly the same, a bi-cycle helmet is very light and gives good air-flow around your head but still give some protection.

I see many expats on scooters in Pattaya using them but would rather be better protected myself when riding sometimes 100km/h on same.

Totally agree with the bicycle helmet line of thought. It is not how fast you are going but how fast the other clown is travelling.

Put up with helmet hair, small price to pay for the continued use of your mental facilities.

The photo.. says it motorcycle... remember now.. People will hit you..
