I am considering doing this, so if you're using a pocket wifi with 4G, pls let me know what unit and what service you are using, what things I need to watch out for. Thanks.

Can't help with your question but I just thought I'd pass on something my wife showed me recently, might be of benifit to someone.

The hotel we are staying in has terrible Wi/Fi so she showed me a neat little trick. With AIS dial *777*210# and then call. Open Mobile Data..For 15Baht you buy 24 hour internet.(don't forget to close Mobile Data again when the 24 hours are up)...Nice One.

I've been using pocket wifi for several years, though I did notice that I had 4G at the airport as I was leaving (AIS). It is faster, but as 4G isnt wide spread as yet, so speed varies. Cost for 30 days for unlimited download is around 1000 Baht.

Speed varies A LOT, even if you have the 3G or 4G sign up does not mean that you get anywhere near that speed, even if you have paid for it.

Read small print!

30 days for unlimited download is not really unlimited.... cheesy.gif

it is unlimited up to a certain GB that AIS have predetermining should be enough for you clap2.gif then the speed dropps to 128kb (cant be used for anything) so only option is to re-fuel again

So i paid 900 baht twice a month, until i one day got do fed up of the sh....t and trowed it away....

Mobile data in Thailand is not so good outside Bangkok....

4G Coverage in Thailand is limited.

AIS 3G is good enough for streaming video and seems to have excellent coverage in cities, if not out in the boondocks.

I would go to an AIS Store and ask them what's available.

That simply isn't true, it's fine in Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket, as I've used it in all of them.

As already said, it would all depend on the 4G coverage of the area you are going to be using the portable wi-fi unit.

In the ones that i use, i have 3G/4G data SIMS, one pay-as-u-go and the other on a 4.5GB package. All mobile operators have their own packages, but coverage of areas may vary, ie, True may have better connectivity in area A than DTAC, but DTAC have better coverage in area B than True. Regardless, you should still be able to do most things on 3G and the coverage is pretty much nationwide.

Another factor to consider is what you are going to use the connection for. If it is only web browsing and email, you would probably be better off subscribing to a monthly package for your phone and set it up as a hotspot for your laptop/tablet. If you are going to use it for heavy downloading, you will need to price out the best 4G solution for you.
