CDC President: Election could be moved to the end of 2017

Kitti Cheevasittiyanon

BANGKOK, 29 January 2016 (NNT) – The President of the Constitution Drafting Commission has suggested that the election date be delayed for a few months from the expected mid-2017 schedule.

CDC President Meechai Richupan said that the charter drafters have not written any provisional clause to make it possible for the current government and the National Council for Peace and Order to pass on the legacy of power.

He is confident that neither will overly exercise its legitimate powers, about which many have had concerns, and that neither will interfere with the plan to hold a general election.

The CDC President also noted that a period of eight months for the drafting of over 10 organic laws is not too long.

In any case, he assured the public that once all drafts are ready, they will immediately be presented to the National Legislative Assembly without any attempt to stall the schedule of the NCPO’s road map.

Mr. Meechai said that the election will still take place in 2017 but it may be around the end of the year instead of the earlier expected date.

Why don't they just stop this game of alluding to a certain date then changing it ?

It's easy to issue a definitive statement and for once truthful that there will only be elections when the PM decides and not a minute before, end of story.

Shelved: Thai elections pushed back again as draft constitution revealed

BANGKOK: Thailand published a draft constitution today but the official in charge of drawing it up said he feared it would not resolve long-running troubles and critics said it would produce weak civilian government under the sway of the military.

The draft of Thailand's 20th constitution is to replace one scrapped after a 2014 coup by generals who promised stability in Southeast Asia's second biggest economy and to heal divisions after a decade of turbulence.

Meechai Ruchupan, chairman of the junta-appointed Constitution Drafting Committee, said his team had included clauses aimed at reconciliation but it had failed to come up with easy remedies.

Who expected only a few years back that Birma Myanmar would be on the way back to democracy and Thailand be returned to the Middle Ages of Democracy.

Burma is by far much worse....but meantime, both current government administrations admire one another for their means of strong arm rule over their respective nations.

Cheers

if polititians are complaining then it is probably on the right track

accountability - stop power abuse cheating and lying - those that are caught dealt with swiftly

what is there to dislike

I am also a little confused at this news report and where it came from, sounds more like a stunt by PTP in an attempt to throw a spanner in the works

It is the people who will decide if this charter is enough to keep future governments above board and honest, something that has never happened in Thailand before

The content of some of these replies posted makes me wonder if some of these posters who are apparently actually living in LOS actually ever seriously consider the absolute security of their anonymity in on-line forums. If someone was to dig or hack deep enough??? Hmmmm. Brave people.

"accountability"

Well shouldn't ALL be accountable??? Well there is a bloke out there that has absolved himself of all accountability now hasn't he???

"stop power abuse"

it's now illegal to click the like button, it is a crime to criticize the government or police, and article 44 will be used only when absolutely necessary.

"cheating and lying"

There is no plan for a coup, there is no plan for an internet fire wall, it is just a study, there will be elections in 2015/2016/2017/????

You like the words "accountability" and "stop power abuse" but it seems very much you tend to apply them in one direction, and faction.

Another glass of bias or double standards anyone?whistling.gif

weak civilian government under the sway of the military.

This is exactly what the Military want.

It's what Thailand needs.

These elected politicians cannot be trusted, I hope they have altered the constitution so that it is more difficult for them to commit corruption and for them to look after the interests of the people for a change and not see it as a means to enrich themselves and their families!!

If they can do this, then the wait will have been worthwhile and the coup justified (in having fixed) the electoral system so that cheats cannot prosper and a genuine government (not of the Shin type) flourishes, that benefits the people and nation. Surely this is what Thailand should strive for.

Indeed, a lot of people seems to think that just because Burma is getting better and Thailand is getting worse regarding freedom of speech and so on, it doesn't mean that Burma has improved that much or Thailand has fallen to how Burma is and/or used to be.

There is still a lot of freedom in this country that simply doesn't exist in Burma, and most Burmese wouldn't even complain about it since it's been like that for ages, so the improvements it's what's focused on, while here we are focusing on everything that is getting worse, naturally.

Of course that doesn't legitimize the abuse of power over here, but it's really not fair to compare with Burma, although the military in both countries may have similar interests....

Clearly, because we've all seen the vast improvements that have taken place the past 20 months. Take the police for instance. The junta has thoroughly reformed........oh, waitcoffee1.gif

Well, at least the state lottery system has been reformedpartytime2.gif
