In the past I have been using an old Galaxy Nexus with an AIS Freedom 3G sim and now I have a Nexus 5X. First of all, will I be able to use the new phone with AIS.

The old Galaxy Nexus worked on GSM-850/900/1800/1900 and HSPA-850/900/1700/1900/2100. I never had any network problems.

The new Nexus 5X works on 2G/3G/4G LTE, GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. It concerns me the new phone does not work at 2100 MHz. By the way, the listed LTE (FDD) bands are: 1/2/3/4/5/7/12/13/17/20/25/26/29

Secondly, if I'm still able to use the new phone with AIS, will I be able to keep the same phone number if I switch to the Freedom 4G sim?

Thanks for any input.

Don't see why it would be a problem, unfortunately my experience is only with DTAC

Have had the same SIM (and number) for 10 years now. Used it in my old Samsung :flip phone, then it worked OK in my Nexus 4 and now my Nexus 5. Not really thrilled with the 5X's " rear hump" and fingerprint reader so won't be upgrading to it but that has nothing to do with my current SIM and number

I have been using the Nexus 5 in the states for a year and half now and I think it is the best phone I’ve ever had. The size, weight and feel is perfect for me. When I get a new phone, the old phone usually becomes my overseas phone. I decided this time to use the new phone as the overseas phone. I’ve been playing with 5x for a couple days now. The camera “hump” does looks a bit weird. I kind of like the the fingerprint reader, it is right where my index finger is when I pick up, so it turns on right away. So far the thing I dislike the most is the size. The 5x is taller than 5. With the 5 I can use it with one hand all the time if I want, with the 5x I sometime have to use the other hand since it is to tall for my thumb to reach the top of the screen. Also the the charging cord it shipped with is a USB Type-C on both ends. I have a couple of USB Type-A male to USB Type-C cords coming from Amazon right now so I can use it with my multi-charger and plug it into my laptop.

Thanks for clarifying that the LTE band number also specifies a frequency, I didn’t know. Looks like AIS LTE operates on Band 1 (2100 MHz) and Band 3 (1800 MHz). I also found a website, "Will my Phone Work", that indicates the LG Nexus 5x is fully compatible on the AIS network.

I know I could cut down my present Freedom 3G sim card to the nano (4FF) size, there are templates on the internet, and my phone should work just fine. I just have to decide if it is worth getting the 4G sim card.

Thanks to both of you for the response.

Yes you keep the same number when they issue a new SIM.

You can actually transfer the number to another carrier too, True recently did for Mrs when she quit AIS.

I had a similar and helpful experience just recently with AIS.

I had bought a nice new smart phone (my first!) in China, and needed to install a micro-SIM card. The old card didn't have the score marks to let me reduce the size.

The lass at the AIS shop at Kad Suan Keaw transferred everything from the old card to a new micro-SIM, including all my contact names and numbers, plus retaining my old number, and it was free!

Now all I have to do is work out how to remove all the Chinese from the new phone!! No, there is no operating manual. It is set to 'English' but doesn't even give you a choice of which English.

Very dependent on the 4G signal where you intend using it. My GF's village in Isaan went from no Internet last April to very fast 4G in a few months. She was with DTAC and the 4G was with True. She swapped with no problem. I can top up her phone from the UK on a CC with no problems but DTAC was faster to do than True.

Good to hear you can swap your number from one network to another in Thailand. I didn’t know that.

In theory, you can move your number from one network to another. I had a bad experience trying to move my number from AIS to another carrier. Two times they changed my passport number on their database to prevent the other company taking over the number. Then they promised me they would not object and everything was in order only to reject it a third time. So, AIS is as law abiding as the man who created it.

Just my experience with AIS

A simple question. Please don't hit me wink.png

About 2 Years ago i changed my old AIS sim to a new 2100Mhz sim which is still in use. Since early Januar this Year, my smartphone shows in the most areas within Pattaya 4G on the display. So, I'm right, i don't have to change something to improve further the data connection, although my AIS 1GB umlimited package for 212 baht incl. VAT still is named as 3G? I use a Samsung Galaxy S5.

If you are utilising 4G, nothing to be done. Try a Speedtest.

Just to follow up, I went to the AIS shop today on the top floor of Terminal 21. They tranferred the information off of my old sim and and transferred it to the new nano sim and I kept my old number. There was no charge and LTE works on the new phone (Nexus 5x, North American version). All that was needed for set up was to go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> More -> Cellular Networks -> Network operators -> then choose AIS.

the the charging cord it shipped with is a USB Type-C on both ends. I have a couple of USB Type-A male to USB Type-C cords coming from Amazon right now so I can use it with my multi-charger and plug it into my laptop.

Be very very careful about using a Type-A male to USB Type-C cable. Many of them are dangerous to your equipment and some can kill your computer and phone or tablet.

Type-A can supply a maximum of 1.8 amps of power but most computers don't go that high 1 amp is common

Type-C Is designed to draw or supply up to 100 watts , most phones and tablets draw 3 amps

Q : Why is a bad 3A resistor a problem?

A: 3A is bad because all of these cables and adapters are legacy host port adapter cable, meaning the other end of the cable is Type-A plug. The Type-A port and the vast majority of the devices that have Type-A ports were never designed to support 3A charging.

The cable lies to the phone by telling the phone it's attached to a pure 3A charging path, like the C-to-C cable to the OEM 3A charger that ships with the Nexus 6P/5X. The phone will attempt to draw 3A, but that may damage the weaker device you have the Type-A end of the cable plugge

USB 3.1 has three power profiles (according to USB Power Delivery Specification), and allows larger devices to draw power from a host: up to 2A at 5V (for a power consumption of up to 10W), and optionally up to 5A at either 12V (60W) or 20V (100W).

Link to good bad cable spreadsheet, price is no indicator of quality.
