No to smartphone, absolutely no. But do want to connect to WiFi in some locations for email, look at news. Will not be doing secret stuff, have wired hook-up for that elsewhere.

What are my options coz i'm not too smart on this aspect of mod life? Am considering a refurbished Apple ipad, but don't know details. Is this a good choice? Want portable, good battery life, big fonts (my eyes poor, am old) and English plz, not Thai.

I have an ASUS 7 inch phonrtablet . Half the price of a appleipad mini plus has a mini usb so you can watch movies off a flash drive. Also with ASUS or android you don't need to go near i tunes.

The iPad and many other tablets have a screen that is big enough for most purposes. You can adjust the size of the reading area (with your fingers) to suit your need. The mini iPad will be sufficient, I think. It's easy to use and there are many great tutorials online to help you

Get an iPad if you want to be stuck with only having applications that are approved by all mighty Apple

Get any Android tablet if you wan't to get what applications you wan't and not what some geek in Cupertino says you want

Go to a big electronic store like Power Buy and try them out and get what you like

No need to be an Apple Hater - Apple has the lions share of the market for a reason...

I've used various different devices - Apple is the simplest to set up and use - Its trouble free.

With regards to Apps - the Op appears to be fairly unsay when it comes to tech - I doubt any Apps he may need are not available on the App Store.

If travelling frequently the iPad Mini would be an extremely convenient option - Either New or Refurbished.

IF not backing up to a computer try and get a high capacity unit on which you can store your files / photos / music etc... I've always used a 128 GB device, but you can get away with a 64 GB device if your music library isn't 70 GB !!

Something to think about - IF you want WiFi only to connect to a WiFi where available or would you want to put a Sim Card (with a monthly data plan) and connect pretty much anywhere you want >?

Very many good quality Android tablets available, some now around 3k baht. With weak eyes best to get the 10" rather than the smaller 7 or 8" versions. Don't need the latest Android OS, any v.4 will be adequate for your needs.

how are you planning on carrying it ?

a 5 inch phone will probably fit in your front pocket , just use it WiFi only

I have a 7 inch Asus fonepad , good quality and pretty cheap , but you need a bag or purse to carry it around ,

but I also use it next to my computer to watch BBC , NHK etc

To the OP. I bought a refurbished Apple Ipad from a stall at MBK about three years ago, it came with a three month warranty.

It has done well for me ever since, never had a problem.

Apples market share is all to do with hype and the desire of Thai's to believe they are only "cool" if they use Apple. Technically there is far better products on the market that give far greater flexibility than you get with Apple. Apple products are well made but for some reason they believe you, the customer, have to do as they say and for me that is a no go. Each to his own I agree but having had an iPhone I wouldnt touch them again for anything.

iPad Mini. If you have poor eyes just make the text bigger and bolder if you need to.

The BS from the Apple haters is ridiculous. For the basic stuff you need it for it doesn’t matter that you have to buy apps etc from Apple only. Apps are cheap. The iPad itself is a little more expensive for a reason. They do the job well, ultra reliable, customer service is second to none. I've broken a few over the years and Apple have replaced with new. If you choose to sell it further down the line and you've looked after it, it will sell for a very good price.

I read a lot of books and just use the Kindle app on the iPad or my iPhone. I haven't bought a book in years and the Apple can store a whole library of books. 32 Gb is the sweet spot.

Try the Apple Store in Thailand. Towards the bottom of the page there is the refurb store. Usually with a saving of up to 25%. The same excellent Apple warranty (Applecare). I have never bought the extended warranty and Apple still fix them.

7 inch tablet is good choice. But I have given up on tablets, in 12 months I managed to destroy four tablets, three Nexus 7 and a Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, they all fit nicely in a back pocket, and then its just a matter if time. I dont know anybody who has used a tablet and hasn't broken in less than a year. I think tablet sales are down severely cos people have realized tabs don't last. There are lot less new tabs being released now.

I use 6 inch phone for browsing now, it goes in front pocket, with little bit of zooming screen is just large enough to be able to read desktop web pages.
