Hi,

I´m coming to Kamala in Janury and stay for 4 month. I whish use my laptop to e-mail and read my country newspaper. Can Iuse pcmc card with prepayed simcard.? where do I buy card and what is the cost for surfing the net?

Is EDGE function or is it GPRS or what is the band.?

The hotel have WIFI but to expensive. There is telephon in the room but it is to expensive to connect a ADSL. That is why I think to buy some card to use. Hope you understand what I meen.

Thanks in advance

GPRS is available in Kamala .... about dial-up speed. If your phone and laptop have bluetooth then you can just connect that way.

Ok, but what sort of program do I need? I´m novis on computers. Is it pcmc card with paysimcard. Some guys sad it was best.

Use a local TH GSM sim card in your phone ... try and get on post paid plan with a GPRS package (200 baht for 50 hours!) if your phone and laptop both have Bluetooth you don't need an aircard etc

My phone and laptop only IR.

You can still connect with IR. No need for the extra expense of the pcm card.

EDGE is not yet activated in Phuket. Bangkok only.

There is also CDMA (sp) on the island at 2mbs, but no one, not even the folks who set it up, know <deleted> I am talking about. :o

And most of our phones do not support it. That is why they set it up, of course. :D:D:D

CDMA (or (EV-DO) is explained in this weeks Phukett Gazette!

According to Woody Leonard who wrote the article is up an working, both in Patong and Kamala!

Don't know is the article is available online!? But Woodys mail is [email protected] !

The CDMA seems very promising fur us that have difficultes with getting a good telephoneline or ADSL! They talk about speed at 600 to 800Kbs!

Drawback is You have to bay a PCMCIA card for 15,990 but maybee it's worth it!

I now have hands on experience with CDMA in Phuket. A friend bought the Air Card from CAT for 5000 baht with a one year sevice plan of 1250 baht / month. It works well in Kamala, Patong and Kata/Karon. Also works well by the heroine's monument. 200-400 kbps download speed. He needed to put the account in his Thai girlfriends name because he is on a tourist visa,

All of the information I have so far says you must sign up for 1 year of service when you buy the card. CAT requires a work visa or a Thai national to sign up. This may change but this is how it is right now.
