Exports lowest in 4 years

BANGKOK, 26 February 2016 (NNT) - Thai exports in January this year made a four-year record low following the vulnerable global economy and decreasing oil price, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The Ministry of Commerce on Thursday reported the value of Tjai exports in January 2016 was 15.71 billion USD, decreasing by 8.91% compared to the same period last year. It was the lowest value since November 2011.

The vulnerable global economy played a role in Thai export contraction to major markets like the U.S., the EU, Japan as well as ASEAN. The 11-year record low global oil price and decreasing agricultural exports also affected Thai exports in January 2016, said the ministry.

Minister of Commerce Suwit Maesincee said Thailand was still the fourth largest exportes in the world despite the decreasing global exports. It could be assumed that Thailand's competitiveness did not drop and the country was still able to maintain its market shares in important trade partners, said the minister.

The global trade tended to rely on exports less while exports in the service sector would likely increase, said the minister. From now on, Thailand had to keep its old markets while searching for new ones, do marketing for the service sector more, invest in foreign countries and participate in economic cooperation, Mr.Suwit suggested.

getting more and more dependent on tourism.

not good in the long run since they do <deleted> it up and go for easy numbers instead of sustainability

"Minister of Commerce Suwit Maesincee said Thailand was still the fourth largest exportes in the world despite the decreasing global exports."

Are they saying Thailand is the fourth largest exporter in the world, or is that a total up up?

If they are claiming that, I'm throwing the BS flag.

I think the B/S flag is flying high.

A quick look at the list and Thailand ranks at 23.. With a minister as ignorant of facts as this its no wonder general Thai population are in the world of their own...

That happened before this minister took over. Didn't you know! Thailand is a world of its own.

Exports are only part of the picture as imports need to be taken into account as well. The problem with imports is that they are supported with taxes that must surely be challenged if Thailand is considered a developer country.

That boast was for domestic consumption and there will always be gullible junta supporters who will believe it and dispense with the facts.

From January 2015-2016 exports decreased by 8.91%.

From January 2014-November 2014 the value of Thai exports dropped by only 0.42%.

But the government predicts a GDP growth rate of 3.5-4% for 2016 largely based on a 5% export growth projection for 2016. If exports instead flatline as predicted by the Bank of Thailand, a 2.5-3% GDP growth rate is more likely at best for 2016. If exports instead contract, the GDP growth rate for 2016 will fall below the 2.8% rate in 2015.

Meanwhile the ASEAN as a whole expects a growth rate of 4-5% for 2016.

Suwit, wake up from your dream pal and come back to reality.

How do low global oil prices have a negative effect on Thai exports? ( no...I'm not being negative, I just want to know)

Thailands exports are down because the rest of the world does not want mouldy/rotten rice.

Why speak the truth when the general population listens to bullsh!t and takes it all in.

This country is a lie, everything about it is a lie.

Tragic but the truth.

Yes the rice farmers must sacrifice their crops so that tourists will have water to drink when they come in larger numbers. Tourists do not require a populous outlay of monies with questionable results. The aging tourist attractions need a little spit and polish from time to time but no major outlays. Yes tourists are the gift that just keeps on giving.

Am sure the hike in salaries help bring this down ... when the economy was suffering back then ? facepalm.gif

They are mixing BS in with the Parmesan cheese instead of wood here.

good job General.

Total control, no political opposition, all of your supporters in big business, and you still run the economy into the ground...

It could be I hear and read things all wrong but every time a govt official opens his or her mouth isn't the assurance that absolutely everything is going oh so well and improving ?

Thailand is world's fourth largest exporter? WTFu and a crock of sh*t!

If they don't even know where they rank, perhaps their numbers are not as low as they think they are.

Claiming to be 4 when you are 23 is quite a goof. I would wager their books are not much different.

Not good news, but need to remember the massive increase in Thai exports over the last 12 years

Everything is cyclic & maybe Thailand just needs to take a deep breath & move to a bit more quality, value added & a bit less quantity

That requires Research and Development and an educated workforce.

Bullshit baffles brains and Thailand has truck loads of the first but very little of the second !

This is the key question. Thailand has the most expensive petrol (benzine) in Asia. In fact more expensive than Australia, with 2014 prices at $1.29 per liter at the pump (outrageous - Malaysia in contrast was 60 cents per liter), compared to Australia's $1.26. GDP per capita in Oz is about $35000, in LOS it is about $3500. Australia also has the highest (or 2nd, depending source) minimum wage (about $18 US an hour... LOS $1.20 per hour!??). So why is petrol so expensive in LOS? Why is the price structure not questioned by the proles? Simple questions with a simple answer (if you scratch below the surface). But all this aside. It is total inane nonsense to think that a country of 70 million can rely on tourism as it's key form of revenue. It won't happen. Tourism is the icing on the cake. It is pertinent that there are sanctions against Thailand by the EU, and the US. It is also relevant that foreign investment in LOS has receded nearly 80% in the last 3 years. Companies don't trust therefore deal with juntas. Sony, Toyota, Honda, WD, and Nikon are just a few mega companies to pull the pin on LOS, in part or totally. (WD makes one quarter of the worlds HDD's... has begun retreating from LOS.) Cutting to the chase, the answer is deliberate perpetuation of the class divide, corruption and a 16th century feudal economy. /RANT

FWIW Diesel is much cheaper... but the Honda Wave doesn't use it... nor does the Snoopy...
