Trudeau say Americans should pay more attention to the world
ROB GILLIES, Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canadians would appreciate it if Americans paid more attention to what's going on around the globe.

Trudeau said in a 60 Minutes interview to be aired Sunday that "it might be nice if they paid a little more attention to the world."

Trudeau, elected in October, made the remarks after being asked what Canadians don't like about the U.S.

"Having a little more of an awareness of what's going on in the rest of the world, I think is, is what many Canadians would hope for Americans," he said in a transcript released to The Associated Press on Thursday.

The 60 Minutes profile of Trudeau will air just days before he travels to the White House for a state visit.

Trudeau said Canadians must be aware of at least one other country, the United States, because of its importance.

"I think we sometimes like to think that, you know, Americans will pay attention to us from time to time, too," he said.

He also seemed to take a jab at an unnamed U.S. presidential candidate whose rise he attributed to Americans' lack of knowledge of foreign affairs.

A spokeswoman for Trudeau said she didn't immediately know what candidate Trudeau was referring to.

Voting in Trudeau as PM is like some prank you did when you were drunk, and then you have to live with the backlash for years.

Why should we care if Americans think about us? I think many places in the world wish that America would forget about them all together. Don't get me wrong, I like Americans, but the lengths they go to to sell next year's bombs and missiles has really made this world a powder keg.

The one who needs to pay more attention is Trudeau, but that would take away from his attempts to break the Guinness record for "most selfies taken as a world leader".

This is the same clueless person that has also claimed that if Trump wins the US election "he will simply have to find ways to cooperate" with Canada, as if Canada (and Trudeau) can dictates terms to the US. Maybe if Trudeau was paying more attention he would have inquired into the fate of the 2 Canadians that were being held hostage by Muslim rebels in the Philippines, while he spent 3 days there at the ASEAN conference (note that Canada isn't even a member of ASEAN but it was a good opportunity for more selfies). THREE days of glad-handing and acting like a rock star while TWO Canadians were being held hostage in the same country and he NEVER even inquired into their fate !

Maybe he smoked a little too much pot when he first tried to get a university degree (dropped out after 2 years). Or during the second time he tried (dropped out after 2 years again). Or during the 2 years he tried to be a drama teacher (quit because, you know, work sucks I guess). Spending time snowboarding and taking selfies is so much more fun apparently. Good thing (for him) he had his father's name (and trust fund) to fall back on.

Maybe he should have spent more time studying while he was in school and maybe then he would have a clue about the world. I'm pretty sure the US pays a lot of attention to everything that goes on, everywhere in the world, just like they've been doing ever since the end of WW II.

Canadians themselves are some of the nicest people anywhere. They have a culture of being polite and hospitable. Most of them live right near the US border partly because it's too danged cold up North and partly because, well, the US is there. Countless numbers of them pour over the US border every day to work. The same with shopping.

I have never heard a fellow American say one bad thing about Canadians. Not once. However, if they want to get involved in our politics, WE'LL BUILD A WALL!!.

Surely we don't want Americans paying more attention to the world; they're bombing enough of it as it is! [emoji3]

Er, Uh, the only war in ME I can think of that Canada wasn't involved in was the invasion of Iraq. The UK provided one third of the troops for that. Canada was "up to here" in the Gulf War, Afghanistan...

It's nice of you to give the US all of the credit, though... thumbsup.gif

Cheers.

Yes! And the Canadians will pay for it, too!! whistling.gif

What kind of neighbours would we be if we didn't at least pay for half the fence?

If you took all the empty beer cans in Canada, you could stack up a wall the length of the border....and about 14 foot high.

So what makes you American guys hate Canada so much. Jealous of a better system without possibility of a civil war, perhaps?

Is all your country can offer Trump or the 35 year old......? And that with the most powerful army in the world.

Indeed yes and for that reason in particular the US should pay more attention to the rest of the world.

Europe is a mass too, but can't say they have to pay more attention to the US.

Probably be better off here in Thailand where a large part of the population doesn't even know what is going on in the rest of the world.

Fortunately not one man speaks for all of us. To be honest I have no idea as to what he is talking about. Sounds like some of his own people don't either.

But instead of haggling with the USA for years to pay attention to Canadians and try to force them to build a Pipeline in there own country, wouldn't it be far better for Canada to build it's own Pipeline to the West Coast, as sell own Oil and LNG Gas to World Markets and stop depending on the US so much?

Yeah, that's true in my experience too. US citizens and Canadians are so closely linked as brothers in culture, experience, economy, education, entertainment, comedy, and other factors, the only complaints I've heard have to do with some Canadians not being able to stay longer in the USA because of Visa restrictions.

<deleted>? My sincere wish is that the US would completely forget about the rest of the world. It would be in better shape than it is now.

Really? I don't think so. If history tells us anything. The world would be a completely different place now. One none of us could imagine...for better or worse.

Having lived in states that border Canada for most of my life, I've also never heard a negative comment. Never.

And there may be the truth of the opinion. Better or worse. Safer or less safe than now? Debate on that could reveal various opinion which I suspect would not favour the current situation so much.

I'm not suggesting that either nationality deserves negative comment because my experience with both has been overwhelmingly positive, but I've heard both sides of that border 'have a go' at the other dozens of times, most good-natured ribbing in the way Brits/Aussies/Kiwis do. As recently as yesterday, so it's quite fresh.

Edit: this reply must be in the wrong place

Major International news is covered on nightly, cable news and print media. Beyond that, Americans don't obsess about the rest of the worlds problems the way they seem to obsess about the USA

That is the sincere wish of a great many Americans as well, me included. I'm not certain the rest of the world would be in better shape than it is now, but I'm pretty certain America would be.

As a former "landed immigrant" I held PR status in Canada and lived there for a few years. In my experience Canadians by and large are very nice people who back then were quite industrious. Sure, they'd experience a little schadenfreude when their bigger, louder, cockier brother to the south got in a jam but by and large most were very pro-American. So much so that several of my acquaintances had homes, doctors and family in America.

Canada's changing though, and with the big money and influx of immigrants from China its becoming a different place. Till now most Canadians have benefited from that change with their land values skyrocketing. I'm not sure how they'll feel when all that shakes out.
