situation is this

My son who is 14 years old now seem to have some serious food issues resulting him in having problems getting to a proper weight

He currently is 170cm (5'6") and only weighs in at 45kg (99Lbs) we have tried everything though he just does not seem to wanne eat and when he eats he just seem to loose interest after a few bites. Now that the school period is over (so more control on what he and when he eats) I want to use these 2 months to bulk up his weight quit a bit (and hopefully his overall immune and power systems with it) in giving him extra food supplements in the form of shakes in the morning and at night maybe?

I know there are good supplement shakes out there with Vitamins etc added to them even but have no clue on what brands and where to find them

anyone here who can get me some extra advise and where to find those.

find a nutrion shop that supplies the body builders with protein powders, just make sure they are made with egg whites and not the full egg to avoid the cholesterol. These powders can be the base of a nice flavourful sake which you can add any thing you like to make it tasty such as any fruit he may like, ice cream or his favourite juices. get a blender and have him do it with you...........There are usually ones near a gym , if your in Pattaya next to Tonys gym on third

Just get some protein powder.. some cacao and some oats and blend it with milk and let him drink it. Then you got a home made weight gainer.

There are a lot of supplements out there - "Superfoods" are what he needs, maybe some Chia seeds as well.

There is no competition within Thailand for such items as the same small group of people own just about everything, so little choice and usually a premium price, they don't need to discount!

What is the boys ethnicity.

1. Is he in generally good health ? Does he drink a lot of fluid ?

2. Does he integrate and achieve at school?

3. Does the boy have friends ?

All these questions should be asked and honestly answered before focusing exclusively on weight.

Based exclusively on weight and with no other information the child would seem to be underweight and you may like to consider seeking advice from a Paeadiatrician (Children's Specialist doctor).

Healthy fats : avocado , coconut oil , lots of nuts , lots of tropical fruit mango, papaya, bananas, and pineapple et , extra virgin olive oil , the purple and orange colored sweet potatoes here , a couple of scoops of whey protien powder in smoothies daily .

This is not normal in a 14 year old boy and I would put more emphasis on finding out why he is not eating than on trying to find supplements (which he will probably also not eat).

Something is seriously amiss.

Assuming he isn't on drugs (which can cause anorexia) then he is seriously depressed or anxious for some reason. He may be being bullied at school, or abused by someone, or he may be responding to problems at home...a lot of possibilities and you need to get to the bottom of it.

Sounds like good advice Sheryl you always come through with the real deal approach but one must be careful that seeking medical help they not just get a prescription of pills with a diagnosis that is inaccurate . If your facet is broken and the house is flooded and you just call a cleaning crew to clean things up but don't fix the broken facet the quick fix is just that . I do agree with you to get to the root of problem but how many Doctors spend the time to really take this approach and not just write a prescription ? Maybe you have a good recommendation ? That would be helpful and in the mean time the healthy fats may help increasing caloric intake and nutrition with no side effect .

I would suggest firstly that the parents try to get to the bottom of it through a heart to heart talk with the boy, discussion with his teachers etc. If that fails then a psychologist/counsellor rather than doctor.

Where in Thailand would a child/adolescent psychologist/counsellor be found, especially one with skills associated with treating eating disorders ?

Manoram Hospital In Bangkok is probably the best place. Also:

Samitivej Srinakarin Children's Hospital

Some other private hospitals and specialized government psych hospitals

In addition some mental health resources like PSI, NCS have counsellors specializing in adolescent issues and/or eating disorders.

This is potentially a very serious matter. Not only is the boy sufficiently underweight to jeopardize his health but it may be a signal of a very serious underlying problem or trauma. Sexual abuse, for example, is often linked to the onset of anorexia.

If you do decide to buy your son protein drinks. There is a difference. Whey protein has maybe 110 calories a serving, while Mass Gainer (also a protein ) has 1100 calories per serving. This is for bodybuilders to bulk up.

What a great suggestion and the one that is the most challenging for parents who may not want to face the most difficult but possibly most productive path .

Whey protein is fine for healthy individuals who workout hard. But is it low calorie and not going to really help with this. Weight gainer shakes are horrible.... Full of cholesterol, fat, sugar, etc (that's how they pack over a thousand calories into them). They are not by any means healthy.

Either way, I personally don't think either of these are suitable for this situation. Definitely should get a Dr involved.
