RAYONG: -- Thousands damsel fish (salid hin) were found dead on the beach in Tambon Map Tapud, Rayong Muang district on Tuesday.

Fishermen at Ao Pradu reported that the dead fish were washed ashore along the beach extending about two kilometers long. They said that the dead fish phenomenon happened every year for the past five years and still they don’t know the real cause of the death of so many fish which were washed ashore.

Fishery officials and officials from Map Tapud industrial estate collected samples of the dead fish to be sent to a lab at the marine research centre in Chon Buri for tests in order to determine the cause of the death.

As for the rest of the dead damsel fish, fishermen in the area have helped in the collection of the dead fish to be disposed of by burial.

It has happened for the last 5 years FUkushima 5 th year March 11 ?

What are you trying to say?

That this is an event in Rayong happening once a year somehow connected with the Fukushima reactor 5000 km's away

Could it have something to do with the oil refinery I wonder ? I used to have a house right over the water down in that area, and the water was crystal clear. Shortly after the construction of the refinery the water was so polluted and dark brown you would not have wanted to swim in it :(

What an alarmist twonk you are.

The pollution from Fukishima is heading west towards the East towards USA coastlines , ( at the moment, and has been for the last 5 years ).

If you dont have an educated or knowledgeable comment to make,, then why TF bother ?

People who make comments like this without thinking bring the value of this well intentioned site down

It is obviously a more localised issue causing this, as we who live here know all too well.

If the same phenomena has been occurring every year for the last 5 years are the results not yet in from the first test...... ?

I see no point doing another so called test just to completely forget about it (if ever it was performed) , or for it to again be inconclusive!

The Rayong coastline is a centre for the petro-chemical Industry and Map Tha Phut in particular has had a dreadfully checkered history as regards both safety and pollution - at one point even the authorities sat up and took notice - around 65 companies had their operations shut down.

So, when people quickly come out and say it's a repeating algal bloom and yet after 5 years have no evidence to support this, one has to wonder....just look up and down the coastline and you'll see acres of potential fish and environmental damage - you'll also see trillions of baht's worth of industry..........then come to your own conclusions....

BTW - algal blooms are often caused by changes in water quality which are often man-made.......

How about testing the fish for whatever they died of? Then we can see if that is the case. In addition, if you are sure that it is a localized issue...why aren't the locals doing something about it? Death of anything by industry has to be stopped immediately, regardless if it is about money or jobs.

Localised probably, but with stuff like this you can't overlook wind, tides and currents - it could have been the result of a vessel discharging unwanted waste some distance away.

In all probability though - given their record - it should turn out to be the responsibility of one of the major national or multinationals operating in that area.

Because it is PTT , IRPC and SCG who are the main big companies here amongst many many others and yeah its probably all about money and jobs.
