Turks protest plans to process migrants returned under EU deal

The Turkish town of Dikili has been earmarked to house migrants sent back from Greece under a controversial EU deal.

Many locals say they don’t want a refugee centre in their town. They say a sudden influx of migrants could prompt a backlash and put off tourists. Turkish officials say they are not refugee centres, but rather processing points from which the migrants will be sent elsewhere as soon as possible.

Nurten Ataoglu says other people can shelter the refugees in their homes, but she doesn’t want them.

“I don’t have to put up with the results of the government’s dirty politics. Let us pay 1,000 liras [about 290 euros] each and Europe can take the migrants. We feel sorry in a humanistic manner. We say no to wars.”

“Those who want can shelter the refugees in their homes but I don’t want them,” she adds. “My life comes first. It is more precious than the others.”

Mayor of Dikili Mustafa Torun said: “Dikili is making investments on geothermal and ecological tourism and this will be an obstacle on the way. We had investors. They filed an application to Gendarmerie tourism desk and started investment. But they will now withdraw their investments after years.”

Dikili is located in Izmir province on the Aegean Sea facing the Greek island of Lesbos.
Returns from Monday

Some 750 migrants will be sent from Lesbos to Dikili between Monday and Wednesday, according to Greek news agency ANA.

On Saturday the Turkish coast guard intercepted some 63 people, mostly Syrians, who had set sail from Diliki towards Lesbos.

The migrants were waiting to be registered back in Diliki before being sent to repatriation centres.

This really is the deal from hell. Nobody wants it and it won't work anyway. The Turks don't want it because all the EU money will be siphoned off by Erdogan's to his bank accounts and those of his family. People in the EU don't want it because as of June 1st Turks will enjoy visa free travel to EU…meaning millions of Kurds will go to Europe and overstay to avoid the bombardment and harassment by Erdogan's troops. The Greeks don't want it because they hate Turks and don;t want any accession talks to start. The UK don;t want millions of Kurds and or Turks arriving, although Cameron insists that the UK is exempt from the visa free travel plans…but one more reason to vote for Brexit.

And it isn;t going to work. The Greeks can't process the refugees fast enough to make a meaningful difference and it is in violation of the ECHR which means that they can appeal if they are to be deported to a non-EU, dangerous country with an appalling human rights record.

Correct on all points.

That is what happens when you make a monumental balls-up and then seek a quick solution. The ramifications of this deal are going to be felt for years to come.

The money will not be given to Turkey, it will be spent by EU authorities in Turkey on the camps. In the latest leaked panama papers there isn't even a mention of Erdogans name, he is cleaner than most politicians...

Do you honestly believe Erdogan's being cleaner than most politicans ??! You say this just because there is no mention of him in the Panama papers (assuming that's the case of course) ?

Erdogan and his cronies will surely find a way to grab a significant part of that EU aid money. They are expert at such things.

With all the terrible news coming from Turkey about AKP/Erdogan, it makes me sick to the stomach as an anti-fascist Turk, to see someone here defending Erdogan ! Turkey's general reputation in the world was already mediocre; but since especially 3-4 years ago, it is at an all-time low now due to AKP/Erdogan ! And, of course, reputation is not the main factor that I am annoyed about. So many innocent people have died and suffered in Turkey and Syria, due to Erdogan/AKP.

As for the refugees, I have written about this in at least 2 other threads. Turkey will suffer various negative consequences due to the large number of refugees. Economically, politically, socially and also securitywise.

The visa free travel is only within schengen area, so does not include UK.

Once out the EU , UK can change the law and stop the free welfare handouts and free medical treatments for EU citizens....

After that the refugees will not want to go to the UK anymore.

Europe is a lost cause.
