BANGKOK:-- A monk being investigated for stealing 11 million baht from a temple jumped to his death from a 21st floor balcony in Thonburi yesterday evening.

He missed an airbag that police and fire services had positioned to try and save him, reports Thairath.

Police said that Jarupat Sriwaranon was a serial fraudster and thief from Rayong. After a series of cases against him he had been ordained and got a high ranking position at the Chak Yai temple in Chantaburi.

Instead of devoting himself to a life of pious denial he pinched 11 million baht from the temple coffers to spend on himself. Police trailed him to the Tha Phra area of Thonburi where he came to have cosmetic surgery.

In arresting him in his rented room on the 21st floor of a 28 storey block, Jarupat asked to go to the toilet. While officers were distracted he went onto the balcony.

Police and fire services coordinated to position an air bag below the balcony but 45 minutes later Jarupat jumped - and missed it. He died instantly at the scene.

Investigators said that Jarupat had been convicted multiple times for fraud and theft on the eastern seaboard before entering the monkhood where he stepped up his criminal ways.

Says all about Thai Buddhism.

Even if he would hit the airbag, he would survive? From the 21st floor? If so, this could be a nice tourist attraction. As well for members of the Pattaya Balcony Flying Club.

Actually this is a great idea. The government should consider to equip high rise buildings with airbags.

He decided to jump, but waited 45 Minutes till the airbag was ready, and then he missed it. Was he looking only for an adrenaline kick? In the next life, better take the elevator.

Needed another 35 floors to be able to put his arse through his head

from the stop.

11 million sure not worth the jump or the thoughts going down.

another sad end to a greedy insipid life.

Seems a rather large amount of money for a temple's coffers?

Oh wait! TiT. Silly me coffee1.gif

I don't want to see a squashed body on the floor but why bother with the pixelated photo published ? Surely they could have printed a file photo of the monk, or even of the building.

21 floors, dude. Maybe the photo wasn't pixelated?

The Chak Yai temple definitely has a unique promotion system. Apparently its, "You got money; you get promoted!"

maybe some of the monks from his old monastery gave the airbag a gentle shove a good ending for a thief save a few more people from loosing their money

A lot of good it did this time! What's the point of having and using airbags if the dummies setting it up don't know where to put it.
