PHUKET: -- What began as new regulations aimed at curbing cheating and poorly dressed taxi drivers has now turned into an additional island-wide action to imporve tour guides' dress codes, officials announced last week.

“From now on, all tour companies must provide staff uniforms for their employees with company logos and names,” said Santi Pawai, director of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) Phuket Office. “They need to represent where they’re from and will not be allowed to wear t-shirts or shorts,” he said.

The move to clamp down on the sloppy style of tour guides and cab drivers began last month, when police arrested 19 taxi drivers at a checkpoint in Patong for dressing ‘inappropriately’.

So it is not OK to dress inappropriately but it's OK not to turn on the meter and instead charge rip-off prices to get anywhere. This is rolling around the floor stuff. There is a laugh a minute on these pages enhanced by the oh so serious looks on the plods faces.

Guess the dress-code doesn't apply to government officials.

Will the illegal foreign guides have to wear uniforms as well?

So, the tour guides cannot wear a decent looking polo shirt and pair of shorts, in this heat?

Think this is more appropriate!!!!8d0753fbffe1d91cfecebfdaac830d14.jpg

I bet they didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition

It must be selected taxi drivers as the louts I see laying about all day are not dressed very well.

This has been a requirement for tourguides for a long time already.

What's next - improve tourists' dress codes?

Especially at the beach and at religious institutions.

what about the public nose digging and butt scratching? will that look better with a uniform and name tag? It's really not the governments job to teach manners, but I guess there is nobody else.
