Does the British Consulate handle UK passport renewals? I got my son his British passport here in BKK, and it now needs renewing.

You mean, 'Does he mean the Consulate on Wireless Road?'. :o

I've just had a look at the embassy's (sic) web site. You can get passport application forms from the honorary consulate at Chiangmai, but they have to be submitted to the main Consulate in Bangkok. The Chiangmai consulate doesn't do affirmations of freedom to marry either.

There's no Brit Consulate on Wireless Road. There is however a Brit Embassy there that has consular functions. There is a Brit Consulate in Chiang Mai headed by an honorary Consul with resticted powers. Now you know. :D

Pete66,

The answer to your question is that you can get a UK passport renewed in BKK or CM.

I got mine done 4 months ago in CM and it was a very simple matter and the staff were very helpful. Allow 14 days if applying in CM

I renewed my passport by post at the Bangkok Embassy. last October. The cost was well over 5,000 baht.

One point to note is that when you take your old (cancelled) passport and your brand-spanking-new one to immigration to have the visas transferred over you must take the receipt that you received from the Embassy for the cost of the passport. It only looks like a 7/11 receipt so don't lose it.

The transfer of visas from old to new passports in straightforward and best of all is free

The only question was that the issuing authority given in the new passport is given as "FCO" which I took to mean "Foreign and Commonwealth Office" Thai immigration insisted it stood for "Foreign Commission" But it was a moot point and didn't matter at all.
