PHUKET: -- The parents of a 7-year-old student of Kajonkiet Thalang School filed a complaint at Thalang Police Station this morning (June 17) regarding alleged abuse of their son by the school’s Physical Education teacher.

The complaint alleges that the teacher pushed their son with his foot into the school swimming pool, resulting in the boy hitting his head on the pool edge and requiring stitches to the wound.

The police complaint follows parents Prathompong and Jiraporn Klubsong filing a complaint at the Damrongdhama Centre (Ombudsman’s Office) at Provincial Hall yesterday (June 16), where they told officials that their son, A, was assaulted by the boy's gym teacher, Itsara Lianloy, on June 6.

Following the incident, the school contacted the parents, who immediately went to pick up the boy from school and take him to be treated at a Phuket hospital.

As they made their formal complaint yesterday, the parents brought with them a copy of a statement made to police at Thalang Police Station, a doctor certificate and pictures of A’s injuries.

“The gym teacher kicked A into the pool, which resulted in A injuring his head. We were contacted immediately after the incident, so we went to school and picked up A to take him to hospital,” Mr Prathompong said.

“Prior to this incident, A’s class teacher (Ms Nitirat Phimmee, who was also present when the gym teacher is alleged to have kicked A) allegedly threw books and a backpack at him during class. She often used intimidating language with A. He was frightened of her,” he alleged.

“At first we were not looking to receive any compensation or for anyone to pay for this incident, we just wanted our son to be transferred to a different class. The school’s chief administrator agreed that the school would move A to a new class when the school reopened on June 7, but that did not happen.

Our son even skipped class because he no longer wanted to be there.

A change of school would be a better alternative than a change of class.

what are you talking about, how would he get used to bullying if he changed school? Have you not listened to the Puyay administrator? He JUST arrived, a few more weeks and weekly beat downs will be alright with the kid.

So kids getting bullied by TEACHERS is ok in your eyes ?

God help your kids, if you have any.

“The parents insisted that the punishment for these teachers was not enough and they wanted their child to move to a different class. Management at the school explained that changing classes would not solve the problem, that the student needed to adjust to their teachers and classmates and to give them at least two weeks to get to know each other. The next thing we know is that they have taken the matter to the Damrongdhama Centre and the police.”

Pushing students with a leg or throwing backpacks at them is never acceptable behaviour of a teacher. You can't "adjust" to that. Of course they'll take the issue to the police or elsewhere if the school even refuses to move the student to a different class/teachers. Basically the parents gave the school a warning shot and moving the student would have settled the matter without much trouble for the school. They refused and now are getting the full broadside.

We contacted the parents right after the accident and told them we wanted to take the injured student to a hospital nearby, but the parents refused and said they would take their kid to Phuket International Hospital.

A hospital nearby means Thalang Hospital. I also wouldn't want to take my kids there if I had the choice.

The spokesperson added that the school pool area does not have CCTV installed, but that management at the school were now considering install CCTV in the pool area.

They are considering it? Maybe they'll come to the conclusion that people just have to "adjust" to the lack of CCTV?

This school seems to have shitty teachers and shitty management. I'd stay far away from that school.

If two teachers at the school are mistreating their son, that suggests an endemic problem. They need to find another school.

The common denominator is the kid, maybe they should look into that part also?

Why are the parents always waiting for someone else to take their case up for them? In this case the police. If it was my child I wouldn't go to the police I would go to the offending teacher and let them see the error of their ways.

The ill-treatment of children is endemic among Thai teachers, as is bullying and racial prejudice. I congratulate these Thai parents for having the courage to take on the system, as few actually do, even though the majority must be aware of the widespread abuse by teachers of the youngsters in their care.

Some years ago, one of my three sons was thrashed with a cane at the local government school, for no justifiable reason, and I persuaded my wife to come with me to the school to protest. The initial reaction by the teacher concerned and the headmaster was almost contemptuous - until I produced a copy of the Thai law relating to corporal punishment and threatened to take them both to court for assault. In the end, they grudgingly apologised and promised to leave the kid alone.

I was so angry I warned them that if the boy caned again (I suspected he might suffer ome retribution simply for us having complained on his behalf) I would personally go to the school and take the cane to the teacher. (Yes, I know what many of you must be thinking).

Thankfully, I am still in one piece and, as a result of our protest, the boy never had a finger laid on him at school again.

More parents need to stand up against bullying teachers with anger management problems. Unfortunately, there are still people - even some Westerners -who believe that sparing the rod spoils the child. Our experience of raising five great kids, who have all gone on to make us proud of them, indicates that the opposite is true.

BTW a neighbour of us took their kid out of the Kajonkiet school on the road to Pa Khlok because the grandmother saw a teacher mishandling the kid after she brought him to school. It's not the same Kajonkiet school as the article is talking about but it seems as Krataiboy said, there is quite a bit of teachers here which can't handle students properly.

As much as I complained about schools in my home country in Europe in the past, I think if I got a kid here, I'd move back for the kids sake.

Completely agree. What really happened we will never know, if the teacher did indeed kick the child she will never admit it, it is the word of a child against the word of a teacher.

When it comes to your kids the best thing to do is simply take no risks. change of schools seems the logical approach and don't bother pursuing the charges, nothing will come of it. Just be thankful your kid is alright, make the changes and move on.

If the child does have behavior problems they could be related to learning disabilities. It would be good for the parents to broach the subject with the administration and teachers at his new school so that the parents and teachers can work together to deal with any problems. Obviously at some schools there is no policy in place and teachers just react with frustration to classroom behavior problems. These parents should seek out a school with a policy that they like. Abusive teachers can really sap students' motivation to learn.

Phuket school issues apology over student injury, teacher behaviour
The Phuket News

PHUKET: -- Kajonkiet Thalang School has issued a formal apology over claims made against two teachers following two parents last week filing a police complaint about the treatment of their 7-year-old son, who needed stitches to close a head wound sustained during swimming practice at the school.

Prathompong and Jiraporn Klubsong filed a complaint at Thalang Police Station on Friday (June 17), where they told officials that their son, A (not his real name), was assaulted by the boy’s gym teacher, Itsara Lianloy, on June 6.

In filing their complaint, the parents presented a copy of a statement made to police at Thalang Police Station earlier as well as a doctor’s certificate and pictures of A’s injuries.

“The gym teacher kicked A into the pool, which resulted in A injuring his head,” Mr Prathompong said.

“Prior to this incident, A’s class teacher (Ms Nitirat Phimmee, who was also present when the gym teacher is alleged to have kicked A) allegedly threw books and a backpack at him during class. She often used intimidating language with A. He was frightened of her,” he alleged.

I took my child out last year because I felt the atmosphere was not right. If the PE teacher had done this to my child I would have gone over there and rearranged his physique, and that of the bitch who allegedly hit him as well, as well as the owner of the school.

Whatever 'A' did...he does not deserve to be injured and mistreated by his teachers...Thailand teachers have a propensity and history of child abuse...taking liberties with parents children because of their position as a teacher...sounds like the entire education system could use some attitude adjustment...
