If the Thai sex industry was shut down...

There's been a few posts recently suggesting that the government would like to dismantle the sex industry. Obviously it's debatable whether they could ever achieve this - out if they seriously intend to. But just for a moment, let's imagine that they do. How would you react? What do you think this would mean for Thailand?

Personally, I'd welcome the removal of much of the industry. It's a stain on the country's image, and attracts some pretty unpleasant individuals. I don't think a complete eradication is practical, or even desirable, but I think Thailand would be a better place without such a visible sex trade.

What does "unpleasant individuals" mean? Las Vegas probably attracts some unpleasant individuals as well, as does the porno industry worldwide.

Let's not beat about the bush; the scum that that industry can attract, Thai and farang, to THAILAND -- we're still on TV, no? Most are harmless and come here for a bit of fun, but you have to admit that there are certain jaded mongerers that this country could do without.

Anyway, I don't think it's realistic. The sex industry has ongoing here for generations (way before Vietnam War) and it'd just make the people resentful and drive it underground. They might make it less visible, but a complete cessation would see a massive drop in the tourist dollar. It wouldn't really bother me either way, then I guess it's one of Thailand's unique selling points and having a choice is always a plus.

Would it make that much of a dent, though? Tourism is only a small part of Thailand's economy, and sex tourism only a small part of that. Plus perhaps a cleaning up of some resorts might attract other tourists.

Back to the questions, guys.

How would you react?

I would be very surprised, and very happy. The thought of thousands of girls from neighboring countries being freed after being held captive for Thais to do whatever they want to with them, would be great.

What do you think this would mean for Thailand?

I think there would be a lot of angrier, more frustrated local men around the place.

"Visible" is the key word here. Thais are very happy with the money it brings in, they are not so happy with every Thai woman being portrayed as a whore, albeit a rather nice one (GFE, etc.). It will be resolved when the women have viable alternative income opportunities.

The sex industry is like the drug industry and all other human vices that can be bought and sold. it's not going away so the issue is how to deal with it.

Basically, acceptable limits need to be established and transgressors actively pursued when those are breached, leaving those playing within the rules in peace.

I personally could not care less whether Nana and soi cowboy open or close, they lost any relavence to me after a couple years here, but those are small beer. The industry is far more deeply entrenched. The visible part of the industry is probably its most benign aspect.

Decriminalization rather than legalization may be an option, but it's never going away. To think otherwise only endangers all participants.

It would be fantastic, all those Lao and Burmese girls held against their will in pretty much every town in Thailand, freed. thumbsup.gif

But who would the Thais take out their teenage rape fantasies out on? Things could get very ugly.

What about the seedy, crazy farangs, who have to have a a paid woman because they have some strange issues with trying to have a normal relationship, but cannot. They base all aldies of Thailand with working girls and cannot even hold a conversation with a non brass lady

I mean individuals who are unpleasant.

Do you have a comment on the subject? Or are you just here to derail the discussion?

You quoted 'unpleasant'...Are you saying all folk who need a bit of girly company are 'unpleasant' .....?

Apparently you missed the word 'some' in my post.

To make it less visible-----yer I think I would like that also, but maybe I'm being selfish--because I don't use it.

I guess there will always be the home grown type industry for residents, as in every other country.

.

Anyone who thinks they can not close it up---(then, if they weren't around Manila in the early 90s) they should read up on it. That was one big sex party, sex clubs everywhere---- although Angeles City etc still ran Manila clubs were at shut down, you still could get sex----go to the nearest shopping centre & someone would be smiling at you in a heart beat. lots of freelancers,

But the famous brothels---go-go bars --strip joints. yup they closed them with some draconian laws.

Penalties could range up to Life imprisonment for those involved in, trafficking which basicly could mean (the same as) taking a girl from Issan to a Patttaya bar.

The Internet has changed the scene so much in the last 10-15 years, I meet guys in Issan who have never been anywhere else---met the girl on the internet, changed planes at BKK and came directly up here.

'It's a stain on the country's image...'

Nice to see a bit of humour thrown in with your comments and questions.

How would I react? With or without the sex trade, wouldn't change my life here.

Would drive it underground, price for sex would go up and even more unsavoury types would be involved, then it would punish many of the girls who make a living out of it, most of the bars would go to the wall putting a lot of people out of work, flows on to land lords and communities, not to mention a dip in alcohol consumption.

The sex industry is contained in Thailand and you can bet a lot of hiso's would have an interest in it, banning something only makes it more desirable the smart way is to legalise it then you can control it.

I came here originally solely because of the industry.I was in a seedy brothel in Mexico and a guy told me try Thailand it beats Mexico by a country mile. Now have had my fill and left the game but think there are many more guys similar to me coming up every day.

Also when I first came it was more underground and more fun.The more it goes underground the seedier it will get.

I feel the industry willnot be shut down but will simply become a monopoly. A few powerful families will control most or all of it. They are simply clearing out the competition at the present time.If you are not on the team you are gone. This means foreign investors in the industry may see themselves forced out int he near future.

Unfortunately, the Thai's are hush hush on those. They will continue in operation.

The high profile....farang geared......places might be the ones to take the hit.

Happened in Olongapo in 91. I saw it all come back slowly...

For every action, there is an equal reaction. Like a pendulum. Even if they ban all gogo bars and barfines....the ladies will still hustle freelance.

A lot of the sexpats and sex tourists would piss off to Cambodia or the Phils . . . good riddance, I say.

Lost count of how many times I've had to tell some douchebag to sling his hook because he thinks his graphic account of what he did with some trollop the night before is something I actually want to hear.

These idiots actually consider themselves successful with women because they bought a ticket to a country where paying a woman to spread her legs is so affordable.

Of course, it's your business what you do but not every foreign male is going to identify with you.

It could never be shut down.

So long as there is a buyer and a seller and a place to meet. Even if that place a virtual, ie: the internet.

The only thing that could happen is less visible.

The actual Country might not be directly affected, as I believe virtually all of the Take, or Profit from the Industry - never ends up in Tax for the Country.

It ends up in the pockets of the bigwigs running the industry

Okay, the real sufferers are the little people on the frontline, the girlies with their legs in the air, or ankles up behind their ears.

The cash economy surrounding the industry, at the higher levels, is but a huge money laundering operation
