Go to a top-up machine, make twelve separate 10-baht top-ups (12 baht with the 2 baht fee), eah top-up yields 30 extra days, so 360 days validity, for 24 baht (the other 120 baht can be used for account credit towards calls, SMSes, or a data package).

There are top-up machines in every BTS station and in front of every 7/11, among the millions of locations.

For my DTAC card, i go to a DTAC Shop and topup 20 baht... for this I become 1 new month. So with 100 baht it gives me 5 months. No Fee included as with the Topup machine.

But it depends, how much money you need per year on your mobile. But also the Idee from mtls2005 is a great advice... I not knew before.

For 1 year it would be then 240 Baht, which can be used for a internet package or call some friends :)

DTAC (only) offers two special expiry extensions which are available in shops: 50 baht for 180 days, and 100 baht for 360/5 days.

They also offer the Day Giveaway service, via USSD, I think it's 2 baht/30 days: So same-same 24 baht/360 days.

Some of Trues Sim will advance only 90 days no matter what you do. Mine was a "tourist sim" handed out free off incoming aircraft and in true shop was told that was the 90 day reason.

I always top up to the max 90 or thereabouts before I leave so is still up and running as soon as I switch on from airport

if you have a bank account with internet banking in thailand you can 'top up' most carriers free of charge by small increments, each one giving you additional time.

you can do that from where ever you are and keep you sim alive.

I maintain a TrueMove H Tourist SIM for a friend, I've made/keep making 10 baht top-ups so he has 365 days validity. Have you tried making 4 or more 10 baht top-ups and then checked the validity? If not, just change to a different promotion (keeping the same number/SIM).

When dealing directly with the service provider, either in their shop or via the web, they often have a minimum top-up amount of 50 baht. Just get in the habit of making the multiple 10 baht top-ups at a machine, or just ask someone in Thailand to do it for you.

All the service providers here have the 90-day use it or lose it terms,

Service Provider reserves the right to cancel service if customers do not make or receive calls for 3 months after service application.

but those are really left over from ages ago, the NBTC deemed that no provider can 'legally' cancel/recycle a number with remaining credit, until more than 90 days after the current validity, regardless of usage.

To me that's the best way. Worked great while working overseas for an extended period of time. Also keeps your thai bank account active.
