Can anyone tell me in laymans terms how an IP camera works for home security? We have a router and fibre network in home.

 

Would the unit need a sim card? Hopefully want something I can just hook up to wifi / internet on my computer or phone if we're away on holidays check

Lots of shops etc that can setup for you. Basically you can buy a IP camera from a company that also runs a server and has a phone app. Connect the camera to your internet, run some install software, camera phones home and the server know were it is (IP address). you have an app on your phone that talks to the server and connects to your camera.
