Another reason why I like and enjoy living in Thailand

While again I understand that many people are here doing entirely different things but for me I have established myself (like some other posters have) and now call Thailand home.  With that said another reason I really enjoy living here is that my wife and I built our retirement home and we are in process of landscaping the property and are in the final stages. However we are not 25 years old and we do not want to wait 15 to 20 years for little trees to grow up and become mature. One great  thing about living here is you can purchase fully mature huge trees delivered and planted quickly for an incredibly small cost. In the the states it is hard to find mature trees and nurseries do not offer them that size and if you did find one to move them, it takes city and govt approval along with numerous permits  coupled with likely a substantial cost etc etc.

We visited a few large tree distributors and found the size and species we wanted,  Initially I was concerned as we live at the end of a narrow road and I did not think they could deliver them. The guy came, looked, said "No problem". They left, came back in a few hours and delivered the first 2. They dug the holes planted them and DONE!!. He left and came back and brought a few smaller ones and done.  We could have gotten larger ones but stuck with some  between appx 10 to 15 years old . There were some that were 10 meters tall with a trunk that was 1 meter in circumference.

This option is very nice as you can landscape your house to be quite developed quite quickly to enjoy the trees sooner. Life is just good a here. Nothing hard about it at all.

Didn't you know, it's against Article 44 to thank goodness there's a place in the world where we can purchase a fully mature tree.

Why no I didn't know about Article 44..LOL.. Is there a subsection?

Well to some responses, we did not want fruit trees. We already have 3 very mature Lumyai(Longan), 3 mature Mango,  some Guava, coconut, banana and a Jack fruit tree (which we will cut down soon as its very old and does not produce good ones anymore). Banana trees are too much work and constantly have to cut down and then try and rid your self of the stocks and the leaves. We wanted some flowering trees that offer shade and to add some color. To VillageFarangs comment  and point, He is right on big ones.  We absolutely did not want a huge trees, something 15 to 18 ft tall and a trunk about 10 to 12".  This way they would not be too much of a risk and they can grow well. We saw some MONSTERS and was surprised how inexpensive they were. I was amazed.  We live in a neighborhood that protects from big wind gusts(or at least breaks up the wind enough not to risk them blowing over). We researched all the species we wanted as we did not want anything that would grow up to be 15 meters or more, more like canopy type. In the end the ease to find what we wanted and have them delivered was easy and cost friendly.

You say you saw some monsters,  exactly how much were they and where.  I am looking to buy trees that can be planted in a line to form a kind of hedge for privacy.  You see there is a two Storey apartment I would like to not see and 15-18m sounds perfect.

The prices range from 10k to 20k bht for some of the BIG ones ( and I mean big 15 to 20 meters tall, trunk diameter a meter. those would take a truck and a crane.) However we did not ask specifically as they were not what we were looking for. location for us are up in the hills in Northern Thailand. My wife found their businesses on some Thai websites. There were 6 or 7 places. I have to believe where you are located you can find a place that sells large trees. I see places everywhere we travel.

OP - you keep mentioning the small costs but yet do not tell how much it is.  So what was it?  All in, delivered?

The 2 larger trees were 2000 baht each (both about 6 to7 meters tall). The 3 Leelawadee trees all about 4 to 5 meters (2 white flowering and 1 red) were 1500 each. Total was less than 10k bht delivered and planted. The 2 larger trees were pruned back for transport and to spur growth. They are already showing leaves and branches are growing

Although I can think of a lot of other nice things about living in Thailand, especially the Thai people. It is very satisfying to grow trees on your property because the soil is very fertile here and they grow very quickly.
If you are fortunate enough to live on high ground around Chiangmai like I did. You would be able to grow a fantastic number of trees fruits and vegetables. I grew Italian tomatoes which were my favourite and I could easily sell them for a high price at any of the Italian restaurants. Other things like real lemon trees, avocados persimons etc. My rhubarb grew twice as fast as it does in most other countries. But the main problem now is help which has become very expensive.

Well Gamini, honestly if you post nice things about Thai people on this forum its usually met with harsh responses that its not possible so I just keep it to reasons I like living here. But I agree with you, I have met nothing but nice folks anywhere I have gone in Thailand  from our contractor that built our house, to the guys that did our driveway and gate to some custom wood work and when we are out and about. The guys that delivered the trees were very friendly and nice. They were careful backing the truck in, did the job, cleaned up and left. My wife is super friendly as well. she greeted them with an ice cold coke on ice after they were done.

As to your fertile soil, Yes, we have the same. Very rich and we grow some incredible chili's and corn. Next season we will try watermelons and I will find a lemon tree and start growing it.

Thanks op.  Sounds like you met some good people and got good service and price.  I will keep your advice in mind.

I really enjoyed ur post...I wish u well...

I had a similar idea to sell my house in US, retire here permanently, buy a house here with some land and grow one each of a variety of fruit trees:  lime, coconut, papaya, mango, ngok, banana, orange, etc., as well as growing some watermelons, pineapples and strawberries on the ground...I would have needed mature trees but as, like you, I didn't wanna wait 10-15 years for the fruit...nice to know u can acquire mature trees here at a reasonable price...

but alas a divorce and my health has prevented this dream...oh well, maybe in my next life!

I agree with the OP as far as costs but they do transplants for resorts all over the world with no issue. It is simply a matter of cost. You don't think the Mirage or the Bellagio actually planted seedlings do you?

Absolutely. They move fully mature tress all over for those big resorts and new big business. However cost is of no object to them so spending $10,000 usd to plant 1 or 2 palm or some other tree is standard fare. I have seen the big tree movers and there equipment in California all the time. But for us regular joes that is not practical or possible where as in Thailand it is. I spent about $300 usd. As I said, Just another reason why I like living here.
