Another over crowded transport vehicle in Thailand.  The more cattle you can jam in means more money and to hell with safety concerns a baht is far more valuable than a life.

Standby for TAT and the Minister to weigh in as this will be seen as a tragedy but not because of the sad loss of life but for the potential damage to the image of the tourist industry.

How do you teach a culture a concept like safety when that concept is completely void in the people of that culture?  Difficult to even find a starting point......

The March 8, 1992 incident, 129 deaths, also involved a religion-related trip.

At least 129 people were feared drowned when a Thai ferry collided with an oil tanker and sank in coastal waters southeast of Bangkok. Eighty-nine ferry passengers were confirmed dead, and at least 40 more were missing, officials said. At least 21 were rescued. Survivors were taken to hospitals in the town of Si Racha, and the bodies of victims were placed in a Buddhist temple. The accident occurred in a busy channel used by tankers and cargo vessels off Si Racha. A relief official said the ferry was taking mostly local Chinese back to the mainland after a weekend trip to Si Chang island, about 15 miles off the coast. They had reportedly been visiting a well-known animist shrine. The official said the ferry sank about half a mile offshore after colliding with the Thai oil tanker.

The captain was not even qualified to drive a passengerboat so hang him high! Just like they did in Korea when a passengerboat sunk...

and a "one off"

They should also go after the owners as they are the ones that allow more then 50 passengers on a boat that was licensed for 50.

How's that possible? I saw a jetski very close to the boat when it sunk......:(

it will possibly increase as more floating bodies are found perhaps some distance away from the scene of the accident as the current looked strong.

the missing persons would have been carried off by the strong current.

the employers should also be blamed for this for failing to check his documentation. how can he deny that he was not at fault. if nothing else he was not licensed  to pilot the boat.

the owners cannot be absolved from the blame although they may say the operators on the boat did the overloading.

you are right, an unfortunate fact of life.

Maybe he lied to them and told he was qualified to drive passengerboats?

And how can there be a big pole underwater, even without warningsigns?

Who built that pole there? It's waiting for accidents to happen...

Rickety, leaky over loaded boats, dumbass for skippers, and an attitude that nothing wrong

will happened to us, they never learn do they? not even from dozens of boats accidents

in not too long  ago where dozens have died in similar fashions,

than also there was a call for overhauling the system and the service, all fell on deaf ears,

and now we see that in this country, they never learn.....

Do the passengers carry any responsibility for going on the water without life jackets, knowing they can not swim? Seriously.

Yes this scene plays out every day until something goes terribly wrong. There will be lots of blame to go around unfortunately the real party responsible will be the one cracking the whip looking for as many people to trot out and point the finger at. They will become the flavor of the month to try and keep others in line. This saves the cost and time of having inspectors monitoring boats sizes, loads and pilot qualifications. A short cut to safety. Well I must go check the mailbox to see if my Ex-pats party invitation has arrived yet.

It was a biggish boat with two decks. No way licensed for just 50 people.

It's a busy river - there can hardly be an underwater obstacle big enough to sink it.

On the video it seems like it just ran straight into the concrete bank - pilot lost control in the current?

As usual, no useful details in the reporting.
