Run for your lives it's an earthquake! Shame nobody told Bangkok workers it was only a test

BANGKOK: -- More than 100 staff ran for their lives believing a swanky new building in Bangkok was falling down in an earthquake.

They spilled out into the street from the Magnolias Boulevard development in Ratchadamri but looked up to see the 58 storey building still standing, reported Thairath.

The vibrations that caused the panic were just engineers testing four giant pumps on the flat roof.

And no one had told the staff in the 80 per cent completed complex about the test.

Reporters who rushed to the scene believing stories of a collapsed building found staff in a state of shock on the sidewalk but no collapse.

Magnolias is being billed online as "the best luxury condominium in Bangkok" having a six star rating. The project is on six rai of prime land on Rachadamri Road in central Bangkok.

A project manager Phisut Areemut, 52, said staff had felt vibrations and as some people started shouting "collapse" and "earthquake" many workers fled. But he said it was only the fact that all four water pumps were being tested at full throttle at the same time. And he admitted that no one in the building had been warned.

Phisut added that the building was state-of-the-art with piling deep into the bedrock and could stand a shake of 7 on the Richter scale.

It will soon be handed over to the owners to start business.

So the builders won't get paid for today since they stopped working?

And none of them used the Hotline for "building about to collapse" which was introduced some months back?

Amazing Thailand, yet again - just another example of "...need to know..." here.

Jeez, even Chicken Little managed to get a warning out to the rest of the farm!

Needless to say, this not-so-Little omission from the building safety check-list is sure to be sorted out in the post-test debrief session.
