Report Poll Reveals Majority of Thais Favor Distancing from Cambodia
Picture courtesy of Thai PBS World A recent survey by the National Institute of National Administration (NIDA) has uncovered that over half of Thai respondents want to distance Thailand from its neighbour, Cambodia. A significant 64.73% also believe global superpowers are meddling in the border dispute, aiming to further their own agendas. Poll interviews, completed on August 18th and 19th with 1,310 participants, sought public opinion on the ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. Results revealed 44.96% of those questioned see the border row as abnormal and concerning. Meanwhile, 29.15% suspect dubious motives behind what they view as a normal dispute. Only a small fraction, 2.14%, perceive no issues at all, reported Thai PBS World. Among the respondents, 54.12% voiced that Cambodia is a country with which Thailand should sever ties. Conversely, 29.39% think association is possible but are wary of trust. A small minority, 14.20%, considers Cambodia an outright enemy, while only 1.91% maintains that the two nations are still friendly neighbours. Opinions on superpower involvement are equally telling. An overwhelming 64.73% suspect interference is self-serving. A minority of 8.85% feel these powers aim to restore peace. Meanwhile, 17.10% urge rejection of such interference, and 6.11% doubt any genuine interest from these nations to intervene. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai PBS World 2025-08-25
