health check for thai wife recommendations?

Featured Replies

Hi all, Id like to get a general health check and a mammogram for my 38 yr old Thai wife. She's quite healthy, but... Any recommendations for reasonably priced checks at BKK private hospitals? I understand the going price is about 10k bt.  Im in Rachada.

best, Glen

That sounds a little low. Many good hospitals (Samitievj for example) charge about twice that for a full checkout.

Chulabkorn hospital out towards Don Muang is a very clean efficient govt hospital specialising in cancer but also does general screening. If i didn't know it was a govt hospital i would have thought it was a private hospital

I had a full check there a couple of weeks ago. I hate hospital visits but found this hospital friendly and efficient with no queues. From start to finish less than 2 hours with initial results given there and then by a Doctor. Longer test results are posted in your choice of English or Thai about a week or 2 later.

I posted their price list on this thread.

Looking at the list a general checkup for her would cost B3,575. A mamogram is an additional B2,700.

Actually rates start below 2,000 and then go way up depending on what is included....and what that is, does not always make good medical sense, especially for women. Not unusual for the most costly packages to still omit important tests while containing many unncessary ones. Check-up packages at private Thai hospitals are designed more from a marketing than a medical perspective i.e. what people want/what will impress them rather than what they actually need.

Need to start with : what tests are actually needed?

At age 38,  if no special risk factors or complaints, she needs just a basic check-up plus gyn exam with thin prep (pap smear) if not done in past 3 years

Routine mammogram is not recommended prior to the age of 40 unless there is a history of breast cancer in the family

She should be able to get this for not much more than 5,000 by choosing the lowest end package and then adding on thin prep (Actually, the thin prep should be part of all packages for  women -- but, as mentioned, the check-up packages at Thai hospitals are not designed to fit medical recommendations so much as marketing concerns).

3,200 for basic plus ?2,000 for thin prep

(disregard what it says re ages, other than thin prep – which all women should get periodically after age 20 or so – nothing in the next package up is indicated for an asymptomatic 38 year old woman)

2,500 for basic package plus ? 2,000 for thin prep

My Thai wife get a full checkup each year which includes a full range of blood tests, mammogram with ultrasound, EKG, chest X-Ray, touchy-feely by a couple of doctors/specialists, etc., and this year's charge at Thonburi 2 Hospital (private hospital) here in Bangkok came in at around Bt8,500.
