Dr Paisan Thanyawinichkul of Chiang Mai’s public health office revealed that the most recent case of the Zika virus was a 37 year old woman who was diagnosed on September 24th. His office has called for the eradication of mosquito breeding grounds in communities in order to prevent the spread of not only Zika, but also dengue fever and Chikungunya. Dr Paisan reminded that Zika is a less dangerous illness than dengue fever, as it only more dangerous when contracted by pregnant women due to the correlation with the birth defect microcephaly. The province’s dengue fever statistics from January 3rd to September 26yj totaled 3,973 cases, with three deaths. -- nnt 2016-09-27
