Malaria in Bangkok?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to get Malaria in Bangkok?

I woke at 4 a.m. this morning sweating heavily, despite the aircon.  I now have a fever, headache and feel nauseous, and have no energy at all.  Sounds like the symptoms of malaria to me.  The only symptom that doesn't fit is that the roof of my mouth is sore.  (It stung when I drank orange juice for breakfast.)

Any thoughts?

No, it is not possible. There is no malaria transmission in Bangkok nor in most of Thailand it is limited to heavily forested areas near the border.

You can, however, easily get Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika, all viral illnesses which would be consistent with your symptoms - especially if the fever is accompanied by chills.

Treatment for all 3 is supportive (rest, fluids, paracetemol - NO aspirin or NSAIDs!) but with dengue it is also important to have the platlet count monitored.

For that matter, initial onset of hepatitis can appear like this. If it is hepatitis, your stool will soon start looking pale in color and your urine dark.

Unless this passes within a day or so, see a doctor.

how high is your fever, or do you still have it.

could be a 1/2 dozen things  ......i'm sure

I was stupid and joined a beach bonfire until late night without mosquito repellent on Koh Tao in 1992 and got malaria. Trust me, what you have is not malaria. If you get malaria, then you are so sick that you don't want to post on ThaiVisa. I measured 40.9 and then it got even higher but I wasn't in the mood to check

It doesn't have to be a mosquito transmitted virus at all. I got Cytomegalo in Bangkok, the doctor said I got it from stagnant water and yes, that would be correct (knowing myself)

It's probably nothing serious, viruses are common this time a year and the vast majority of them are not dangerous for healthy people, just irritating.

Drink plenty of water and if you really start to get sick, then don't wait
