Chelsea Climbing The Popularity Table But Man U Still The Team To Beat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Article No. 490 - May 12, 2006

Reigning champions Chelsea may have won the 2005/06 English Premier League title but Manchester United remains Britain’s most popular football club, according to Roy Morgan International Single Source findings. Manchester United, described recently by American owner Malcolm Glazier as a “franchise”, is supported by 4.209 million Brits. FA Cup Finalist Liverpool is the second most popular British Club with 3.133 million British supporters with Champions League Finalist Arsenal (2.652m) rounding out the top three. Despite their on-field success Chelsea must settle for fourth on the table with 1.485 million supporters.

Glasgow Rangers, with 1.43 million supporters, are the fifth most popular team in Britain followed immediately by their old firm rivals and Scottish Champions Glasgow Celtic who are supported by 1.406 million Brits.

We might be crap, but we're well supported. :o

The most surprsing one is Norwich as the suport seems to be over three times the population of the city. Most peole will support a football team when asked the question but this is different from being a 'proper supporter' - hence Leeds get a high rating but when push comes to shove and the team aren't winning they get pittyfully low attendences. I believe te two teams that get the highest support proportionally to the population of the town are Norwich and Burnley - these two way above any others.

The highest amount of season ticket holders that don't live in the postcode area of the city in which the football club is based, Liverpool. Fact. Daily Telegraph.

Look it up for yourself.

Your funny comments amuse though so, carry on.

Newest statistics i could get hold of http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/po..._met_county.asp

For 2001. Manchester had a population of 2,482,352. So take away the 886,000 Man City fans (cos they actually live in Manchester :o ) That leaves a population of 1,596,352. Now, even if they ALL support United, that means 2,612,648 supporteres don't live in Manchester :D

..........and the point is, we know loads of them don't live in Manchester, I don't anymore. The Cockney Reds are a well known large support base. Coming from Mancs that moved away years ago, their kids now support United.

This wind up technique gets used quite a lot though and, if it makes me ol pal Mr Bojangles feel better when its already clear he supports the most Massive team in the land, who am I to comment. :D
