Looks like I am going to need an operation on my elbow as I haven't been able to play golf for 18 months.

It's going to be infinitely easier for me to have the operation in Thailand as I have no permanent base in Australia anymore.

Has anyone had experience with Thai surgeons, would they have the experience and expertise as their Western counterparts?

No problem with them, actually much preferred in many respects since as a patient I am able to pick and chose based on their CV and gut feel when I meet them. For golf elbow, Dr Chanakarn in Chiang Mai has an excellent reputation (for all round ortho. surgery), he can be contacted via Rajavej Hospital or his own clinic just across the river from the same.

Depends entirely on the individual doctor, they run the full gamut from very inept to very capable.

There are some good specialists here is sports medicine, where in Thailand are you located?

Be aware though that IF surgery is indicated, ti will be very costly. However most elbow problems do not need surgery. Has it been evaluated by an ortho specialist yet?

I have a friend who fell off a ladder and shattered his elbow, apparently lots of broken bone fragments. He went to a provincial hospital and the doctors told him they wanted to cut off his arm because they couldn't put his elbow back together. Of course he wasn't having that. He was very lucky that the hospital had a skilled American doctor visiting. That doctor told him that he could save his arm but that he would never have full use again. His elbow is not pretty for sure but he does have about seventy percent use. That was many years ago.

Do not try this in Hua Hin, need to come to Bangkok.

There is an excellent hand specialist at Siriraj who also has hours at Chaophya Hospital in Thonburi and Phyathai 3  (also Samitivej but that is less convenient if coming up from Hua Hin)

I'd try at the first place (Siriraj private channel) first. Call center is 1474

Good surgeons here, no question, but avoid surgery of course. I strongly suggest you try a Theraflex first:

These get rave reviews from fellow sufferers. It seems you can't buy one in Thailand and Amazon won't ship here, so try Ebay.

They have something very similar by a company called SKLZ called a "Massage Bar" in Siam Paragon.

It was either in PowerBuy or the Gadget shop one floor above or below. Saw it the other day when I bought one of their "Accupoint" devices.

In UK they're generally categorised as upper limb surgeons but within that you do get hand& wrist guys which is what I want(mine is a fairly common wrist condition).I could stay here in UK to do it but that would mean missing my annual 4 months in Hua Hin and at the moment that's breaking my heart! It's bad enough that I'll miss all the golf. Out of interest any specific reason why Sheryl is stating not to go to Hua Hin?

That looks like a decent massage bar alright. The Cheap Charlie massage bar is merely a rolling pin you can buy in any kitchen supplies dept for a couple hundred baht--and you can use that for your Achilles tendonitis as well. A foam roller substitute can be made from a piece of PVC pipe to which one would glue or affix foam from, say, a yoga mat, or shelf paper.

Be great if somebody comes up w/ a local outlet for something like the Theraband Flexbar.
