As some of our members are aware, Immigration has a policy of trying to rid Thailand of negative foreigners with its policy of 'Good Guys In/Bad Guys Out.    In your opinion, is this strategy effective?

Please feel free to leave a comment about how you think Thailand could best reduce the number of undesirable foreigners.

Abolish retirement visas?

  • Popular Post

Have not noticed an intolerable amount of undesirables.  Only have noticed the unrelenting reports of such people.   Immigration seems to be solving a non problem.  It just looks like another shake down.   'Good Guys In/Bad Guys Out' is like 'quality tourists'.  It is just Thainess for the desire for more money for the government coffers.

As far as the Thai authorities are concerned, I would think their idea of a good guy is the one who spends the most money, and the bad guy is the Cheap Charlie type, that would make me near the bottom of the list because I don't drink alcohol, don't frequent bars, and always stay in 500Bt guesthouses when on my travels.

Amongst Thaivisa users a bad guy is seemingly anyone who is not on a retirement visa, does not own a blazer and is not a member of a golf club. HTH.

So you think that most people on retirement visas are undesirables?? No, I am

not on a retirement visa, and it is not a visa, but extensions.

Yes, a lot of them are negative, me, I'm a bit of both, always say what I feel, but surely that is no reason to abolish retirement visas.

Personally, I believe anyone who has lived here for ten years or more, contributing to the economy and being on good behaviour should be granted permanent residency.

Is the policy of Good Guys In/Bad Guys Out effective?

Is Prayut still PM?

That could be me if I ever wanted to get bored on a golf course, with me getting older now, if someone badly upset me, my golf club would also be swung, and not at a ball.

I gather that membership committees aren't as free with the blackballs as they used to be. Due to economic necessity some are forced to accept self made types I believe - even though they don't like the cut of their jib.

I have no doubt that they will catch more than they normally would but what the percentage increase will be is anybody's guess.

So far, they've just irritated me. I have no idea if I'm a good guy or a bad guy, so not sure if they intended to or not.

Since this policy is policed by imo "Bad Guys",it makes it a moot discussion

It's pretty clearly not working when Immigration often makes life difficult for ordinary, entirely law abiding residents but alleged terrorists are able to buy entry into and out of the country by paying off Immigration border staff, apparently with little backlash even when those kinds of things are publicly disclosed.

And when I say often makes life difficult for ordinary residents, I mean things like the mess that is CM Immigration, the varied offices that essentially are shaking down applicants for extra payments or essentially forcing them to use paid visa agents, running an online 90-day reporting system that is down as often as it works, having a comments/complaints link on the main Immigration website for BKK that never is functional, totally failing to have a clear and consistent set of rules/requirements among ALL the Immigration offices, etc etc.

If they are referring to the initiative wanting to discourage people from overstaying, I think it has had an impact.  I think combined with the crackdown on multiple consecutive VE border runs, you are seeing an increase in people getting tourist visas or non-immigrant visas in neighbor countries or from their home countries.  Or doing in-country extensions.

But has the corruption merely shifted to the immigration and border offices?   Now if you want to stay legitimately, they are implementing 'expedited' service fees or offering to stamp you out for an VE if you are suspected of staying in thailand too long by having an additional chat with the supervisor in the back room.

I think it is getting much harder to stay here permanently if they don't want you too, so from their point of view I would call it a success. I wish it were easier for many of my friends who are good people but don't qualify to stay long term to stay here but I guess we are in Thailand and they will decide who does or doesn't qualify.

I think a lot of what the Thais are concerned about is, are you able to take care of yourself in the event of accidents, health issues, etc. The unpaid medical bills used to be staggering but I don't know if that has improved or not. I think if they were worried about what you spend they would not allow the 800,000 baht in bank method of proof of income, instead requiring a given amount in transfer each month from pensions or accounts back home. The 800,000 can lay dormant while you spend nearly nothing in their economy.

I spend a lot here as I would back home, but I also use the cheapest hotels with AC too. I like all people wealthy to dirt poor if they are nice, honest, and friendly people. I hope they kick the rest out rich or poor. If they ever come up with an unfriendly idiot detector I hope they use it.

Handkerchief affixed on head is another good sign of ne'er do wells, particularly if they're looking for a chippy!

Has anyone seen any recent 'initiative' prove effective? Apart from a couple that have reduced Chinese tourism that is.5555
