Urethra Stricture

Featured Replies

I live in Chiang Mai which does not have many urologists.   I have been to Ram, Bangkok and Sriphat.   At the RAM and Sriphat it would seem that there is one urologist whose name came up on each occasion.   At the Bangkok the urologist looked like a 17 year old - lucky him - and said he had been carrying out the procedure for a short time so for me, I ruled him out plus they would not quote a firm price just that it would be somewhere between this and that..   The other urologist - RAM and Sriphat - seems to have  mixed reviews.  My impression of him was of a 'gung-ho' type, but I know there ex pats who like him.   Just how competent he is to carryout a procedure which is known for a less than favourable outcome in many cases, I am not aware.

So my thoughts have turned to Bangkok - the city, not hospital - and wondered if anyone can give me some reliable information of possible hospital/urologist and price.  If Sheryl is reading this I would appreciate any input as I am told you have a good knowledge of Thailand medical facilities.

Many thanks

What procedure are you asking about?   That would likely be greatly different and expect most doctors would cite a range of costs depending on exactly what is required during the procedure.

I have recently had major operation with Dr. Charuspong Dissaranan at Bangkok Hospital but that would not be an inexpensive location for treatment.

Indeed best to come to Bkk for this

The most experience in Thailand with various treatments for urethral stricture is a  team at Ramatibhodi Hospital.

See if you can get a private appointment, through their Premier (after hours) Clinic with Prof. Wachira Kochakarn  http://med.mahidol.ac.th/qsmc/th/service/premium_clinic-th

(even though his name may not appear on the list, ask for him)

Thanks to all who offered help particularly Sheryl.  Having been given a hospital number I now have an appointment with Prof. Wichira Kochakarn on 24th November 2016.   Apparently he is a very busy man, I'm informed by the appointments lady.

I can wait to see him at the moment since the good old NHS (UK) were talking about Feb/Mar 2017 as the earliest possible date.

Once again Many thanks

This message is primarily for Sheryl.   I have been trying to find a profile on Prof. Kochakarn without any success.   Can anyone help.

I would like to know a little information about him and anyone's experience before committing my care to him.

Many thanks

He is the head of urology at Ramathibodhi Hospital (a major teaching hospital) and a enior Professor at Mahidol, a leading medical school. He has published extensively in international journals. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Wachira_Kochakarn2/publications/3

Specific to urethral stricture, see this article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11281501

He has also written chapters in textbooks on urology http://library.tma.uz/uum2/rscu/files/books/Female Urology - A Practical Clinical Guide.pdf

But of course, you have to also use your own judgement in terms of how he seems to you and how comfortable you feel with him once you have had a consultation with him.

Thank you Sheryl, you are indeed extremely knowledgeable and very helpful.   I can see that urethra stricture is very much within his field of expertise and you have calmed my doubts.  Thank you so very much.
