Hi

We have just acquired a street/beach dog/puppy and would like to know what shots we should give the dog. We did give her some Frontline for the ticks and fleas and this morning we cleaned her ears and found about 15 ticks. A couple of questions I have, 1) is there any flea, tick treatment that will last for a few months or do we need to apply each month?

2) What other vaccinations should we get for the dog?

3) Any vets in Chumphon?

any other advice is most welcome as I am a first time dog carer

Thanks in advance

How old is the pup? We were advised by the vet that pups under 8 weeks shouldn't be treated with frontline or similar products.

And what frontline treatment did you give it? The dosage is based on the weight of the dog and i think frontline have different packages such as 0 - 5kg, 0 - 10kg, 10 - 20kg & 20 - 40kg. Be careful you don't OD the little chappie.

Frontline certainly is a monthly treatment and i believe most similar treatments are along the same lines. Not sure how long or effective flea/tick collars are?

When you take the pup to the vet, he should be able to tell you straight away what the pup needs. Just make sure that anti-parvo is included in the cocktail. If you want to start on the right foot, have a blood test done on it as well, it isn't that expensive and may well pick up indicators, or traces of exotic ailments that can be treated which will save grief later on.

Hope that helps a bit........................;)

Hi, very helpful info, thank you. The puppy is about 3 months old and we did check her weight. Good to know about the blood test and anti-parvo, just need to find a vet in Chumphon now.

Thanks

Right down the street about 700m  from the 4 way light intersection of Ocean Mall, Train Station..... after the school towards Pathio. There is a 24 hour veterinary clinic at the corner.

There is also another animal hospital on the same road as the Tessaban is.

They are both within 2km of each other.  Good luck.

The pup should get a 5 in 1 puppy shot. The 5 in 1 vaccination provides protection from Distemper, Hepatitis (Adenovirus type 2), Parainfluenza, & Parvovirus.   He/She should also be treated for worms, a pill.  It should also get regular treatment for heart worm, I use ivermectin injections every three months but there are many oral treatments available like heart guard. At six months old he/she should get a rabies shot.  I give my dogs booster vaccinations of both the 5 in 1 and rabies every year thereafter.  I've not had much luck with Frontline so I won't comment. Ticks are a real problem in farm country where I live  as all of my mutts frolic in the corm and sugar cane fields.

Wow..

My 2 dogs only shots where when they were puppies.  Never treated for anything since... not heartworm, no boosters.  I just pull off any ticks I find on them....  perhaps less than one a month... and they never had fleas.  They are indoor dogs (at night).. but have 2 rai of fruit orchard they run about in during the day with the ducks and chickens.

Guess it depends on where you live.

They are only small mix breed dogs.  One injured its eye once and I gave it some eye drops from the pharmacy and it recovered.  I bath and cut their hair myself too... as the groomers were too rough with them.  They never needed their nails clipped either... because they run about so much on concrete driveway.  The oldest one is over 9 years old now.

Thank you, this info is great, I know both locations well but never noticed them as clinics before (now I have a dog, things change)

Parvo is super important, remember that it needs to be topped up after x? years

Your local vet will know what vaccines to give. Trust him

Ticks: 15 is ok, it's when you can teach children to count to 100 on your dog that you really start to worry :)

It is not tick season now (that's the hot season)

Shots: Shots last a month I think it was, my vet will check his records and refuse to give if too close so don't take them more often than the vet recommends

The small bottles: You can buy small bottles to pour on the neck, they work pretty well too. Can't remember how long they last

Tick shampoo: I find them pretty useless really

Thanks for the info, we are going to the Vet tomorrow, will ask about the Parvo shot, what is the average cost?

As I said earlier in post 5 you want the 5 in 1 shot. Parvovirus is part of that shot.  You also want the puppy to be wormed, a pill.  The last time that I bought the shot and the pill from the vet they cost 240 baht.  I give the shots myself.

Posted

Yes as wayned says, they are combined but when it starts to run out, then you can also take only Parvo.

I can't remember the total cost when we went there, vaccine and tick bottles wasn't cheap actually, I think we paid over a thousand baht

It's all worth it of course, they are so lively

Posted

The tick treatment is expensive.  I'm not sure how old the dog has to be before you can use it. I never had much luck with it  as I live in farm country and my dogs have free run of the fields.

Posted

Agree totally. Can't remember of course, I hopeless at that but the tick shots cost more than expected

OP: The bottles are OK priced, there are 2 types, one to pour on the neck of the dog and another one to use on the cement floor outside the house. They  work quite well together unless it's a real tick season. Clean the cement a bit first, I use washing machine washing powder and a long brush from Carrefour, then pour and let dry. Tick season is hot season but I find it good to start a few weeks early or at least don't be late

There are tick hell holes and nothing helps... I live in Bangkok and would love to live on a farm, won't happen for another 10 years. Will prep myself for the tick war :)

I lost Bok Bik to Parvo in the early 90s, the vet didn't know what it was then, I lost Jo^ng in the mid 90's found out what it was then, the VET tested and then refused to take her in so she died a day later. I lost Simbie in the mid 2000 because the vet didn't tell me that Parvo needs to be topped up

I hate Parvo

i use controline on the back of the neck and shoulders, and bayticol as a spray around the house and anywhere he lays outside.

I took the puppy to the vet today, had Distemper and Parvo treatment today (cost 230 bhat) and have to go back in two weeks for Adenovirous, Para influenza, Rabies, Leptospirosis, shots. I thought the Vets clinic could have been cleaner, saw a needle laying in a crack on the tile floor which I pointed out to the staff, they just looked and said nothing. Will look to see if it is still there in two weeks time. I will also check out another clinic as I would expect animal clinics to be very clean, anyone else come across clinics that look like they need a clean? Or am I being to western?

Pups can be treated from 6 weeks old.

Our vet completes a full course of injections over three visits, two weeks apart. (including worming).

Each visit costs from 180 - 240 baht, so a full coarse is around 600 baht.

Thereafter annual top ups.

Ticks can be a real nuisance. Having tried shampoos, to frontline, nothing guarantees 100% eradication.

Ticks love longer grass, so keeping the grass cut helps reduce the risk of infestation.

I've found the best deterrent is a product called 'Bigbang Spray', which I spray weekly paying particular attention to the ears, neck, head, armpits and feet where ticks aim for.

I check my dogs daily for ticks and remove any found by grabbing at the base with tweezers, so the head is removed along with the body.

Check between the toes especially.

The small black ones are the males and don't feed on your dog, it's the females that burrow and feed of the dogs blood. They are often found in pairs attached, female feeding while the male is fertilising the eggs.

I also use a product to spray the yard and garden twice a year in the hot season, although it's expensive.

i see you havent mentioned the brown DOG TICK,the one that carries the ENRLICHIO CANIS very dangerous[anaplasma platys]

Posted

Correct meatboy, the brown tick is believed to transmit Ehrlichia canis .

The brown tick is common worldwide, especially the USA. The host for the disease is believed to lie in cattle and deer before being transmitted to other animals through the tick.

Fortunately the brown tick is far rarer in Thailand due to reduced livestock.

Keeping your dog away from farmland and areas where buffalo graze reduces the risk of your dog being infected.

Ticks go through 4 cycles of nymph, but it's believed an infected nymph must feed for at least 24 hours on a host to pass on the infection, which is another reason to check your dogs daily.

There just isn't enough research carried out to trace and eradicate this disease.

This site carries good information for those sufficiently interested; https://pestid.msu.edu/insects-and-arthropods/brown-dog-tick/

Posted

I'm not sure why your vet requires  three visits two weeks apart to complete the puppy vaccinations and worming.

The serum  is available either from my vet, the pet food supply store or the local pharmacy as a 5 in 1 one time shot ( Distemper, Hepatitis (Adenovirus type 2), Parainfluenza, & Parvovirus). I usually wait until 8 weeks old to give my dogs the shot.  The worming is done not by injection but by a pill which is either administered whole orally or crushed and mixed with it's food.

i am surprised that its far rarer here as our boy got the decease last yr.and i have seen plenty of them brown ones about when our neighbours dog was alive.i am sure he got it from him.

we did have many in the bedroom up to last march, but since then only one,yet we dont live anywhere near farmland.

i do think you are mixing up the deer tick that carries the lyme decease.

I think that you are spot on as far as the money.  That was the way it used to been done decades ago but the 5 in 1 has been used for a long time.  I've raised Golden Retrievers all of my life, both in the US and here, and I can't remember when I stopped giving the separate shots, but before I came to Thailand in 1997.  It used to be 4 in 1 and they added one but I don't remember which!
