As regular readers of this Forum are aware, in general, I have no problem with falsies when it comes to beautiful women...when it comes to something important like money, it's a different story.

I was paying for my morning cup-o-joe at my regular this morning and the clerk went all funny at one of my bills. When I asked her "pen arai," she handed me back one of the two 100 baht notes I had given  her and said to me that it was missing the security strip and holograms on the right side of the face page of the note.

She was right, where these features should have been was just a plain white strip. Everything else about the note seemed genuine, with the main double portraint water-stain holograms (front and back) and thin security thread on the obverse left side of the note being present. The note did have a bit of a strange hand-feel to it, like maybe it had been through the wash; and was a bit lighter in colour than a new note.

In any case, I exchanged the note with another and we both examined the questionable note more closely. I said I would take it to the bank when it opened for a definitive analysis. I have to give kuddos to the sharp-eyed clerk for spotting it; and I'm glad it's only a 100 baht note.

Has anyone else come across a note this and do you think it's a fake or just a misprinted note?

Possible counterfeit note on bottom.

Front portrait hologram seems ok...

Reverse hologram and security thread are present.

Whilst the note definitely appears to be missing some features iam more interested in what you think shart means ?

Ahh OK, shart has been edited to sharp, thanks for clarifying !!

If it was a forgery you might expect the forger to make some effort to reproduce the hologram.

May be a genuine fault that got past the quality control. I hear that some of these faulty notes can be valuable.

I would think it's a failure of the quality control, it's so obvious that white strip. Any fake money printer would at least have printed something there i would think. Almost anything made in thailand has some issues so why the money not?

I got a new billiet of 1000 the other day and refused it. It looks odd and they also like to refuse my real 100 euro-billiets so it was my time to make problems now. No problem though, just got another one.

Find a genuine misprint of most currencies and they're worth a lot of money to collectors.

I'd hang on to it.  At least until I understood its value in the collectors' market.

This is not a misprint - just a damaged bill.

You nailed it Lop...I took the bill to a bank where they examined it under a blue-light and promptly exchanged it for an undamaged note. As you say, these are apparently just vinyl strips on the paper (not embedded) and can become detached from the underlying paper.

As I noted, the bill felt like it had been through the wash.

Mrs. BENQ has washed my shirts and just came back with this, asking "is this real money"

And I can guarantee you that was a complete note before.

Another lesson learned.

Never a problem with 20 Baht notes.

They come out clean and fine.

But don't wash the latest 100 Baht notes!

I don't know about Thailand, but in many countries it is illegal to take photos of whole bank notes without adding the word "specimen" to the photo..

Be careful.
