What sort of standard are the taxis at the airport and anything to look out for or be careful about?

There is taxi counter inside the terminal just after passing the customs and before going outside the terminal. The prices are fixed and per destination (per townships or even hotel names). That can give you an idea how much to pay if you prefer negotiate yourself

Are tha taxis clean, reliable, good condition etc is the main question.

Reliable, yes. Good condition: not all. Some have Air Cond not working. But in general they are save and honest
